Miscellaneous Miscellany Monday: Family Visits Boston, Slideboards, Subway Star Wars

1. I had an awesome weekend spending time with my family in Boston over the weekend. My parents, as much as I love them, have made it out of New York state maybe once in the past 20 years. As such, it was kind of a big deal that they made the trip out (along with my sister and her family) to not only see the facility, but get a little idea of what a great city Boston is. My girlfriend and I took everyone out to the North End on Saturday night for a little taste of Little Italy, and yesterday (Sunday), I finally bite the bullet and went on a Duck Tour.

Duck Tour = about the cheesiest thing a tourist can do in the city, but I have to admit it was pretty awesome. Being a past history major myself (you can imagine how much I got laid in college), Boston ranks pretty high on the nerd scale. Until I took the tour, though, I had no idea just how much really “went down” here. And, what’s more, only three people gave my little nephew grief for wearing Yankees attire during the tour. What can I say, the kid has balls.

2. Charlie Weingroff has been writing some stellar blogs lately. Check out THIS ONE where he discusses whether or not the slideboard will destroy your knees.

3. Likewise, another article from the really smart guy front is THIS ONE by Patrick Ward discussing lumbar flexion training with MMA fighters. I tend to side with Patrick on this one.

4. I’ll be presenting at Wheelock College this weekend, talking with 300+ incoming freshman on nutrition. Rather than discuss things like macronutrient breakdowns, the role of insulin, or any number of things that will make them want to swallow live bees; I figured I’d keep it real and talk on their level.

The overall message, of course, is going to be one of simplicity: when in doubt, eat REAL, natural, un-processed foods. The way I see it, all these kids care about is how to keep off the dreaded “freshman 15,” and that’s exactly what I’m going to do. Pssst, here’s a hint – Red Bull ain’t water.

5. Lately our staff lifts on Saturdays have become more of a hybrid strongman/who-will-puke-first-hahahahahaahaha-projectile-vomit- training session. It’s gotten to the point that a handful of our high-school and college athletes want in on the action. Last weeks circuit was pretty brutal:

A1. GCB Bar Walking Lunges 4×30

A2. Prowler Tug-o-War (standing still, attach a rope to the sled and pull it with your arms) 3×20 yds

B1. Trap Bar Farmer Carries (375 lbs) 3×40 yds

B2. I wasn’t paying attention – but I’m pretty sure the guys couldn’t feel their legs

C. Prowler Sled Push (30 yds) – low setting for 20 minutes

Still think your 10 minute EDT circuit of bicep curls and tricep kick-backs is hard?

6. This is pretty much the coolest thing I’ve watched in a month

On that note, I need to get my food ready for today and go lift some heavy things. Yankees suck!
