Eat More Kale

Seems simple enough, right?

Wrong.

Last weekend, as we were leaving the mall to head back to my parents house to devour round four of leftovers from Thanksgiving dinner, my girlfriend and I called my Mom to see if she needed us to pick anything up at the grocery store.

Me: Mom, we’re about to head into the store to pick up a few things, do you need anything?

Mom: I can’t think of anything. We have plenty of leftovers, you know.

Me: I know. We just thought we’d pick up some fresh kale and steam that up for dinner.

Mom: What’s that?

Me: What’s what?

Mom: Kale

Me: It’s a dark green veggie, Mom.

Mom: (Dead air)

Me: Hello?

Mom: I don’t even know you anymore.

Okay, it didn’t quite end like that, but suffice it to say, both myself and Lisa got a little laugh out of the fact that my mom had no clue what kale was.

Full disclosure: my family has never been much on the whole “eat your veggies” thing. Back in the day, if there were potatoes on your plate, that counted. That isn’t to say that my mom never made me and my brother eat our broccoli before heading back outside to beat the crap out of one another – she did. All I’m saying is that vegetables were never a huge priority in my household growing up.

Of course, fast forward to today, and you’d be hard pressed to find me eating a meal WITHOUT veggies somehow included. Even still, as much as I try to convince her otherwise, my mom is still a Stubborn Sally when it comes to eating them. I have, however, won a few battles, and have gotten her to start taking fish oil, and vitamin D. Baby steps.

Anyhoo, imagine my reaction when, as I was opening up presents last night for my birthday, I got this shirt from Lisa (impeccable timing on her part, and explains why she laughed so hard when I had the above conversation with my mom a few days beforehand):

Is that not one of the most badass shirts ever? More to the point: Why eat more kale? Well, it’s arguably one of the most nutritious foods on earth. Technically a cabbage and member of the brassica family, kale ranks right at the top as one of the foods that helps to fight off those nasty free-radicals we always hear about. Specifically it’s been given an ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity – basically a really fancy way of determining all the different antioxidants and phytochemicals that are found in plant food and seeing how well everything works together as a team – of 1770. Hint: that’s REALLY good. The next bestvegetable is spinach at 1260.

But I digress.

More importantly, just look at how “gunny” that shirt makes me look! Eat more kale people. You too, Mom. And don’t even think about leaving this table till you finish it!

For those interested, check out THIS site for more info on where and how you can get your own “Eat More Kale” t-shirt. It sends a great message and it’s just a cool shirt overall.

Also, on a completely unrelated note, Eric Cressey is holding a limited time sale ($30 off the normal price) on Show and Go: High Performance Training to Look, Feel, and Move Better from now until midnight TONIGHT (Wednesday 12/1). The feedback Eric has gotten from people currently doing the program has been outstanding. Likewise, the entire CP staff is in the middle of phase four of the program, and we’re hitting PRs left and right – both Pete and myself hit front squat personal bests earlier this week. Needless to say, it’s an amazing program, and if you missed it the first time around, you’d be crazy not to take advantage of this opportunity while it lasts.
