Body By Boyle Online

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past I don’t know, 25+ years, you’ve recognized Mike Boyle as one of the most influential people in the fitness community.

Mike has trained countless professional and amateur athletes throughout the years, and it’s safe to say that there are many of us out there (myself included) who owe him a debt of gratitude for not only being a class act, but for playing such an integral role in making the industry better.

On a personal note, I met Mike for the first time back in 2005 when I first moved to New England, and since then he’s undoubtedly been a huge role model for myself. In fact, much of what I do with my own athletes and clients can be attributed to what I have learned from him in the years since.

In short, he’s kind of a big deal. Not too long ago, Kevin Larrabee mentioned to me that he was working on a fairly substantial project with Coach Boyle, and that it could possibly help revolutionize the industry. At first I thought he might be lobbying Congress to pass a law making it legal to judo chop anyone caught curling in the squat rack.

No such luck, unfortunately. He did, however, let the cat out of the bag last week and released Body By Boyle Online. I asked Kevin to stop by and help explain the program and to give some more insight on what it entails and who’s it targeted towards.

TG: KevLar – most of my readers will know who you are, but for those that don’t, give them a brief overview of who you are, and what you’re all about.

KevLar: Most will know me from The FitCast Podcast. But for those that don’t, I’m a 24-year-old strength and conditioning coach currently working at Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning. Before that I was an apprentice to the Jedi Masters at Cressey Performance.

While there I learned the importance of measuring GIRD (TG Note: that’s geek speak for Gleno-humeral Internal Rotation Deficit), how epic Thanksgiving day lifts are with friends, and that I don’t look half bad as a Hooters waitress.

Note from TG: objects in the mirror may be closer than they appear.

No, but seriously I learned how to coach and how crutial it is to keep learning and improving yourself. I also enjoyed a brief stint at Boston Sports Club for a year where I dominated as a personal trainer and learned about customer service (go read Delivering Happiness if you haven’t already).

TG: How many times have you watched Back to the Future? Be honest.

KevLar: Just part I? Seriously? About 250 times. I literally wore out the VHS copy that we recorded off TV when I was a kid. Can’t wait for the Blu-Ray 25th anniversary edition comes out in a few weeks!

TG: And you give me flack for being a Star Wars nerd? Anyways, lets get on topic. As someone who knows you on a personal level, I know how much time and effort you went through to get Body by Boyle Online up and running. Care to elaborate? Give us the nuts and bolts of what this product entails – what can people expect?

KevLar: Well, we put over 300 man hours into BBB Online. Currently we have over 280 exercise videos. We shot EVERY movement and exercise that is used at Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning. In addition, every video has been filmed in High-Definition and professionally edited. By everything, I mean, all of the warm-ups, stretches, speed work, agility drills, plyometrics, ballistics (medball) exercises, olympic lifts, and strength training exercises.

We also shot tons of video with Mike on various subjects like “Real HIIT,” and “How and When to Progress and Regress.”

Twelve months of programs are also included at launch with two months worth of programming being added each month. These program include our NFL combine weight training program, to the same programs we use with our college, minor league, and pro athletes, and even some of the most complete and effective fat loss programs out there. We obviously go into much more depth about what BBB Online is all about HERE.

Note from TG: You may be wondering why in the hell there’s a picture of Jennifer Garner in the middle of the interview:

1. I needed some type of picture to break it up a bit.

2. Mike actually worked with Sydney Bristow a few years ago while she was in Boston filming a movie.

3. It’s my blog, I can do what I want.

TG: Who is this product geared towards? Offhand, I think it would be an invaluable resource for strength coaches and personal trainers as it allows them to get a firsthand look inside Coach Boyle’s head in terms of programming and progressions (among other things). What about for those who are just your typical meathead/likes to lift heavy things?

KevLar: That is a great question, BBB Online is really geared towards all of the above. By that I mean you can be someone who just wants some great training programs for yourself, or you could be a trainer/coach/facility owner that wants to use the same programs that have made MBSC the #1 gym in America.

Mike put it best when he said we are literally giving you the recipe. The most exciting part is what we can do in terms of the educational content. We are delivering an education database that also educates you on why Mike designs the programs the way he does. That way you can take the same principles and create your own programs.

I haven’t even gotten into the XPS software that is included. Basically it allows you to do some amazing things as a trainer, especially if you are working with distance clients. Again, we have more info and demos on the website HERE.

TG: Wow, that’s pretty cool! As with any product that comes out, it’s inevitable you’re going to have a few people drinking from the Haterade bowl. As such, there are some out there who view distance coaching as a sham and a waste of time (as opposed to going to your local Globo-Gym and having some trainer who got “certified” last weekend take you through the Cybex Circuit). For those people, how does Body By Boyle Online differ? What are the advantages and disadvanges (if any)?

KevLar: BBB Online is different because we have done all of the work for you. We literally shot over 280 exercises. You can then use our exercise database to create your own programs and have confidence that when you send that program to your client they will see proper demonstrations, not just a link to youtube.

The XPS software also gives the trainer instant feed back on their meals (the whole USDA database is included), workouts, and see some amazing statistics about their clients.

If you have a blog or an internet presence at all, there will be people that want you to train them. They may just be hundreds or thousands of miles away.

TG: Excellent point. As someone who trains a few people via distance coaching, I like to think that my programming is a bit more non-cookie cutterish than what people would most likely get at their local commercial gym. Sure, there are limitations, but this seems like a phenomenal product to help bridge that gap. More importantly, as you noted above, it’s something that even strength coaches and personal trainers can use to help hone their programming skills. Thanks for your time!
