Note from TG:  Some of you might remember a post I wrote not too long – HERE – where I went on a tirade about how a chain in NYC apparently was banning squat racks in their gym.  After writing the piece – and punching a wall or two – I was glad to see that there were plenty of people out there who agreed with me, and were just as dumbfounded by something so absurd.

The thing about blog posts, though, is that they’re limited.  In reality, their real purpose is to provide a brief, albeit current, snippet (or picture) on any particular topic, idea, or concept that’s rolling around in my brain at that moment in time.

Not surprisingly, I had more to say on the topic, and today’s post links to my current article that just went live on t-nation.com today.  It has the same title (what can I say: it’s a killer title), but delves a little deeper, as well as discusses some of the squatting variations we incorporate at Cressey Performance.

    Nice article Tony, but I'm a little disappointed that you didn't cover the benefits of Bosu Ball squats when looking to shrink ones testicles and increase man-boobage.

      Yeah, and while you're one of the few that "got it," I'm sure there are plenty of non-nerds out there who are scratching their heads wondering, "who the hell is Frodo? And where is this Mordor place they speak of????" I'm cool with straps on front squats, and is something I've utilized on numerous times with those where the cross-arm grip is too problematic. If anything, it serves as a nice intermediary between the cross-arm grip and clean grip.

    Hey. Thanks for a great article. I just wanted to ask you what do you think about olympic squats? They tend to suit me more than powerlifting stance squat as I use more ROM but you must be really mobile to do them with proper depth...I also think that you must break at the knees first while doing this type of squat. What do you think about it? Can you share any resource concerning differences between the two?

      Toni - OLY style squats are perfectly fine in my book - assuming, of course, one is "suited" for them. And yes, while breaking of the knees is kinda mandatory when OLY squatting, you still need to sit back to a degree as well. If you do a search on t-nation, I know Mike Robertson wrote an excellent article on the differences between OLY squats and powerlifting squats.

    Great stuff Tony. One question, would you ever just consider doing front-box squats? To get a the best of both worlds, so to say? Because I feel like I need to box squat but need the shoulder friendly benfits of the front squat as well.
