Appearance on the 50 Percent Facts Podcast

I had the lovely opportunity to be invited onto the 50% Facts Podcasts recently hosted by Mike Farr and Jim McDonald. I “met” Jim back in the early 200o’s via the T-Nation.com and RuggedMag.com forums. We eventually met in-person during a group get-together in NYC.

This was circa 2004 when meeting people online was becoming more normalized, but still put you on par with possibly being an ax murderer for doing so.

Fast forward 15+ years and neither of us would have ever thought we’d both being reaching audiences across the world discussing lifting heavy objects of all things.

It was fantastic to catch up with him on his popular 50% Facts Podcast where we exchanged notes on the current state of coaching & the fitness industry.

Opening and Running a Top Class Studio Gym

For the record: “Top class” wasn’t my choice of words to describe my studio.

“World Renowned, Michelin Rated, A++, ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️, Sick Hip-Hop Beats Factory” would have been more like it.

Either that or, “Meh.”

I don’t know, the essence is somewhere in the middle…haha.

Opening & Running a Top Class Studio Gym

I was invited onto the James Rafferty Radio Show recently to discuss my experience operating a small training studio here in Boston, MA.

And by “small” I mean “inside a space the size of most people’s living room.”

It was a lovely chat and I appreciated James’s interviewing style (which I think most of you will enjoy as well). I mean, if anything, aren’t you the least bit curious how I managed to swing a Silence of the Lambs reference into the conversation??

Appearance on the Heavy Metal Strength Coach Podcast: UK Tour, Tacos, and 600 lb Deadlifts

It’s not lost on me that some of you reading may be thinking to yourself…

…”Heavy metal? Tony? No, it can’t be.”

Listen, as a strength coach it’s pretty much inevitable a fair portion of your working life will be saturated by the sounds of Metallica, Rage Against the Machine, and Tool.

And so it happened, early in my career (particularly during my Cressey Sports Performance days), my ears would sometimes bleed (in a good way) from such sounds. However, as everyone is well aware, I’d always try my best to bring a little levity to the training environment with a little Wu-Tang or Tiesto.

And while I can’t say I listen to a lot of heavy metal music at my studio in Boston, I do appreciate its ability to help trainees succumb to their inner rage monster for a big lift when needed.

That said, it was a pleasure to be invited back onto The Heavy Metal Strength Coach Podcast hosted by Chris Kershaw

UK Tour, Tacos, and 600 lb Deadlifts

Chris – in case it wasn’t obvious enough – is a strength coach based who likes heavy metal music. He’s based in the UK and was kind enough to invite me back onto his show recently to discuss my upcoming workshops in England (London & Leeds) this coming Spring as well as go a bit into the weeds on the importance of meeting your clients/athletes where THEY are.

HINT: That’s where the taco reference comes from.

And, of course, there’s some discussion surrounding lifting heavy things.

Chris is a natural interviewer and I think you’ll enjoy his laid back, conversational style.

Did You Know I Ran Cross-Country For One Year in High-School?

It’s true!

It was awful and I never did it again, but in terms of some unique “Tony trivia” you may have never known about before…

…there you go.1

Endurance athletes tend to be grandfathered into this train of thought that strength training should be avoided like an invite to a Squid Game and that it will slow them down.

This couldn’t be further from the truth.2

Weightlifting is critical for runners who want to get the most out of their training. While it’s easy to skimp on weights in favor of running more miles, weight training for runners has so many benefits:

  • Increased speed and power
  • Greater running economy that helps improve endurance
  • The ability to handle a greater workload (i.e., you can run more!)
  • Improved injury resistance

I was recently re-invited onto the Strength Running Podcast hosted by Jason Fitzgerald and he was kind enough to parse out a 40-minute snippet from our close to two-hour conversation that we recorded for his private High Performance Lifting Program group on his site.

We covered myriad of topics:

  • How do runners find a great strength coach or gym? What are the top 1-3 things to look for?
  • Should weightlifting routines be modified for older runners?
  • If an athlete wants to avoid any Olympic lifts but still wants to develop power and explosivity, are there alternative exercises that would be helpful?
  • How can runners tell if they are over or under training with regard to strength?

Coaching For Introverts and Prepping For Life’s Dumpster Fires

Appearance on the Future of Fitness Podcast

One of my favorite people in the world is Eric Malzone. I mean, he’s a really good friend, so of course it makes sense he’s ranked high on that list.

Somewhere lodged between my wife, my kid, and Jason Bourne.

Eric’s a great coach, and he works with a litany of other fitness professionals on how to grow & build their respective businesses and brands. He also runs a very popular podcast, one of which I’ve been invited on as a guest several times.

In my latest appearance he and I discuss how being an introvert in the coaching industry can be an asset, but needs some slightly different approaches. We also talk about sawing a couch in half and when life serves up hot dumpster fires.

You know, the normal podcast stuff.

Complimenting Others & Non-Confrontational Introvert Things

My last podcast exploits took me to Edmonton, Canada where I had a lovely conversation with Chris Liddle, host of The Lifestyle Chase Podcast.

Chris and I discussed elements of the health/fitness industry of course (my training, what I feel is a common mistake most fit pros make when trying to build an audience on social media, etc), but we also ventured off the beaten path and talked other things like why complimenting others (and giving credit) is kind of a big deal, as well as the gloriousness of being an introvert.

A nice conversation for sure.

Appearance On the All About Fitness Podcast

I had the lovely opportunity to make another cameo appearance on the All About Fitness Podcast hosted by Pete McCall.

Pete’s a fantastic interviewer and has built one of the most popular health/fitness podcasts out there because he makes it his mission to invite intelligent, jacked bald dudes on his show relay actionable and relatable content on his show.

No fluff.

No BS.

No keto recipes.

This episode was recorded live at my studio in Boston and I think you’ll dig it as Pete and I discuss everything from why strength training doesn’t differ that much between athletes and us normal folk, as well as a bevy of other topics.

Appearance on The Breakthrough Secrets Podcast

Recently I was invited onto The Breakthrough Secrets Podcast hosted by Chris Abbott and Mike Kurkowski. I know I say this every time I’m invited onto a podcast, but this time I really mean it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation.

This is not just three dudes talking about lifting heavy things (although there’s a teeny tiny bit of that). This is three dudes hitting on a litany of topics ranging from authenticity to the intimacy of writing to that time I had to take a young athlete aside for disrespecting his parent.
