Stuff To Read While You’re Pretending To Work: 4/20/18

I have to apologize my dear readers, I feel like an abject failure of late.

Not for anything serious like failing to remember my wedding anniversary or for misusing the Oxford comma.1

No, I’m a failure for failing to keep up with writing content for this site of late. I know I shouldn’t beat myself over it – don’t worry, I’m not quite at Da Vinci Code monk flagellation levels yet or anything – but I do feel bad for my recent lack of prose and pithiness.

I’m sure your life will go on.

Nonetheless, I’ve got some blog ideas marinating in my head, and I hope to get them out ASAP.

Lets get to this week’s stuff.

BUT FIRST…CHECK THIS STUFF OUT

1. Even More Complete Shoulder & Hip Blueprint – Dates/Locations Announced

Dean Somerset and I are currently in the throes of drumming up new content for our staple workshop series.

We’ve presented this workshop all over the world – London, Vancouver, Oslo, Prague, Boston, LA, Hoth – and even turned it into a popular digital product HERE so everyone can enjoy it.

We’ve already nailed down dates in Slovenia, Houston, and LA this fall (2018) and are also in talks to bring it to Detroit, Philadelphia, Edmonton, Australia, and Singapore in 2019.

If you’re someone who’d like to host this event/participate in a tickle fight please reach out to either Dean or myself.

Also, go HERE if you want to see if we’re coming to your neck of the woods.

2. Strong Body-Strong Mind – Bonn, Germany

My wife and I will be in Bonn, Germany on Saturday, June 30 to put on our 1-day Strong Body-Strong Mind workshop.

I’ll be speaking to assessment, coaching up common strength exercises (squats, deadlifts), and how to better “match” your programs to your client’s abilities and goals.

Lisa will be discussing how to better manage client expectations, motivation, and how to adopt better mindset strategies for success.

And then we’ll have a beer….;o)

Spots are limited and the Early Bird rate is still in effect (but not for long).

For more details (including itinerary and registration) go HERE.

3. 2-Day London Workshop w/ Luke Worthington

^^^ It’s so good we didn’t even feel the need to come up with a witty title for it.

After my workshop in Germany I head over to London to take part in a 2-day event (the weekend of July 7th) with my friend and colleague (and handsomest man alive) Luke Worthington.

This one is filling up fast…..go HERE for more info.

I’m a firm believer that most people can’t get enough upper back work in throughout the week. With most of my clients I have them perform some kind of moderate to heavy row variation 2-4x per week. On top of that I’ll also pepper in some additional isometric or scapular stability work just because. Here’s a superb drill I picked up from @smittydiesel I’ll call a Band Reverse Flye Walkout. As you walk back you need to resist the pull of the band, which torches the rhomboids, muscles of posterior cuff, and scap stabilizers. Be careful you don’t “shrug” throughout, you want to keep shoulder blades depressed and together. 118% more effective if you yell “this….is….Sparta” as you perform your set.

The Trainable Exercise Menu – Chris Chase

I first heard Chris use the phrase “trainable menu” on Mike Robertson’s podcast a year or two ago and immediately wanted to make out with it.

It’s 100% in line with my own coaching philosophy in that you can ALWAYS train around an injury. As a coach/trainer focus more on what your clients can do – their trainable menu – and less on what they can’t.

2. Free Meat via ButcherBox

NOTE: This offer ends on the 31st!!!!

ButcherBox may be my most favorite thing outside of kitten cuddles and a Lord of the Rings marathon.

How it works is so simple it’s silly:

  • You go to the site and curate your own box of delicious cuts of meat.
  • It’s delivered to your doorstep.
  • Cook that shit and eat it.

My wife and I have been using the service for a while now and it’s always serves as a monthly highlight.

Here’s a fantastic push-up variation I got from @smittydiesel that’s super challenging: Renegade Push-up. One of the advantages of push-ups and why I like them so much is their versatility and how seamlessly they can be progressed and regressed. Here I take away a base of support (an arm) and try to hold a 3-point position without allowing my torso or hips to rotate. This is a killer core challenge, and to be honest I’m gonna throw myself under the bus a little bit and say I should have tried to hold the elbow tap a liiiiitle bit longer. I kinda rush things in an effort to get to a more stable position. This is an exercise where slowing things down is paramount its effectiveness. Any sort of mild elevation will work here: and aerobics stepper, setting up the bar in a Smith Machine to the lowest setting, or anything similar. Also, totally cool to alternate which hand comes up; feel free to experiment.

Oh, hello.

I’m in NYC!

I flew down here yesterday from Boston courtesy of Equinox. I’ll be doing two separate workshops for a bunch of their trainers talking about shoulder assessment and how to turn their clients into a bunch of bench pressing and chin-upping T-1000’s.

I still wanted to make sure I got this week’s list up for your reading pleasure, though.

I got your back.

1. I’m Everywhere In 2018

I’ve got a bevy of speaking engagements lined up for 2018, and next week begins the madness.

I’ll be in NYC speaking at a few Equinox locations on March 16th and 17th, and from there on out I’ve got a place to be at least one weekend every month for the foreseeable future.

It’s a nice feeling to be in demand.

I’d encourage you to click the link above or THIS one for more details/insights into where I’ll be and when.

BUT FIRST…(SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS, STUFF I’VE WRITTEN, & OTHER TIDBITS CURATED TO SHOWCASE HOW IMPORTANT I AM)

1) Coaching Competency – Sterling, VA

Excited to head back to the DC area and present at Beyond Strength Performance NOVA in Sterling, VA.

Assessment, program design, exercise technique, how to make killer LOLCat memes. It’ll all be covered.

More details in the link above.

2) The Fitness Summit

I’m excited to be heading back to KC this year for The Fitness Summit. It’s always been one of my favorite fitness events of the year.

This year is a first, however.

Dean Somerset and I have been invited to do a Pre-Conference to get the festivities started that weekend.

We’ll be taking deep dive into squat and deadlift technique: discussing ankle, foot, hip and upper extremity considerations in conjunction with regressions/progressions, programming, and breaking down technique flaws.

It’ll be a four-hour glimpse into how we coach.

There’s currently a FLASH sale of $10 off for the Pre-Conference ($90), and then you get to listen to the likes of Bret Contreras, Alan Aragon, Mark Fisher, Susan Kleiner, Greg Nuckols, and many others for the next two days after that.

And there’s some sick BBQ.

You won’t want to miss it.

3) Spurling Spring Seminar

I’m excited to announce that both myself and my wife, Dr. Lisa Lewis, will be presenting at the inaugural Spurling Spring Seminar at Spurling Fitness in Kennebunk, ME in a few months.

If you live in New England and you’re a fitness professional you won’t want to miss it. Early bird special is currently in effect.
