First Things First

Anyone else start watching Cobra Kai on Netflix this past weekend?

Man, what a delightful piece of nostalgia that was/is. I’m only two episodes in, but all it took was 20 seconds for me to have the widest smile on my face I could possibly have.

My wife wanted nothing to do with it, but she heard the music, the dialogue, and me laughing out loud numerous times and at one point yelled from the other side of the apartment…

…”do you have a boner right now or what?”

My wife is cool.

Anyway, now if only someone would remake Airwolf????

Strength Chat Podcast

I had the pleasure of being invited back onto the Strength Chat Podcast hosted by Steven Cuthbert.

Steven has a very conversational style with his interviews which I thoroughly enjoy and in this episode we discuss the effects of COVID-19 in the industry and how I feel gyms and trainers will need to adapt moving forward.

You can listen to the episode on Spotify HERE.

More Than Fitness Podcast

I was recently invited onto the More Than Fitness Podcast hosted by Matt McLeod. As you can likely surmise from the title of the show…

…we chatted about more than fitness.1

Staying Calm Through Uncertainty, Becoming a Successful Coach, & Daily Routines

I really enjoyed the conversation Matt and I had centered around COVID and how I’ve handled the pandemic with regards to my business, how I’ve handled throwing an Achilles rupture on top of that, how I got started in the industry, and I’m sure some Star Wars shenanigans are tossed in there as well.

I enjoy more of a freestyle interview approach and that’s exactly what you get in this episode.

3 Things Podcast: Return of Gentilcore

It doesn’t have quite the same ring as “Return of the Jedi” but nevertheless it was AWESOME to make another cameo appearance on Casey Lee’s 3 Things Podcast.

This format is really fun and engaging and I appreciate Casey’s interview style.

We cover topics ranging from business and goal setting to COVID shenanigans and also get a little off-topic with some Star Wars geekery.

I Have Things to Say

My friend and colleague, Jason Leenaarts, was kind enough to invite me back onto his popular podcast recently (this time without my wife) to discuss the future of the fitness industry.

We talk about why studios like CORE should be considered different entities from box gyms and group exercise formats in light of the pandemic. We also discuss how all of my businesses: speaking engagements, travel, and online programs have been affected and how I plan to move forward.

There’s also a few insights into my recent Achilles injury and how I’m mapping my way around that.

The Future of Fitness Podcast: Vulnerability in Crisis…and Cat Memes

I had the pleasure of being invited back onto The Future of Fitness Podcast recently with my good friend Eric Malzone. If there’s ever a time to sit down, take a breath, and really talk about your feelings…it’s now.

There’s no sugarcoating anything.

Stuff sucks.

At this point I want nothing more than to tell 2020 to just go stfuuuuuuu.

Like many other fitness professionals out there I’m at a loss as to what to say and what to expect. I’m trying to figure things out as I go too.

Like:

  • Should I purchase the Pro or Business plan on Zoom?
  • How can I best serve my clients?
  • What can I expect once things turn back to normal? What will “normal” even be or consist of? What percentage of clients will come back to the gym?
  • How hard am I going to have to resist tossing my face into an ax over (gym) lease and rent negotiations?
  • Will my wife ever see me NOT wear gray sweatpants again?

I don’t know a lot, but what I do know is that it’s okay to feel our feelings during this weird, weird time. I don’t know about you, but I feel pretty damn vulnerable of late and I discuss it during my chat with Eric.

Give it a listen below.

The FitCast – Shelter in Place

Some of you may recall that circa 2008-2009 I was one of the co-hosts of The FitCast alongside Kevin Larrabee, Leigh Peele, and Jonathan Fass.

Kevin figured it would be nice to reconnect the old gang to serve as a bit of an escape for everyone else during this shit-show of a time.

And, not for nothing: this ended up being EPISODE #500.

Congrats Kevin!

We ended up recording for close to two hours with an EPIC off-topic section at the end (SPOILER ALERT: Star Wars beat down ensues).

Anyway, I hope you enjoy (and here’s hoping Kevin decides to record a few more episodes with the four of us again. Pester him….haha).

The Grafters Podcast

I enjoy every podcast I am invited on to, but this one in particular was a delight take part in. The Grafters podcast is hosted by Chris Kershaw and Reanne Francis who are both personal trainers located in Leeds, UK.

In this episode we discuss what it’s been like to navigate the apocalypse (COVID-19) and what I have done to “pivot” my business. In addition we go into some of the mental gymnastics surrounding helping our clients/athletes during this weird, weird time.

Give it a listen (what else are you going to do?)

How to Build an Online Brand

I made a cameo appearance on the Fit Dad Nation podcast w/ Steve Roy recently to discuss keto recipes.

LOL – just kidding.2

We go into some detail on how to go about building an online brand/community in an ethical manner that will lead to long-lasting revenue streams.

In a nutshell: It takes a lot more than just setting up an Instagram account highlighting your badonkadonk.

Appearance on the Rebel Performance Radio Podcast

I had the opportunity to make an appearance on the Rebel Performance Radio Show recently hosted by James Cerbie.

James and I have a bit of history because he was an intern at Cressey Sports Performance back in 2014 when I was there, and it was great to sit down and talk some shop.

Rebel Performance Radio Episode 13

I loved doing this episode because not only was it great to catch up with James, but he has a very casual way of interviewing that I enjoy…

…just two dudes talking about dude stuff.

We covered a gamut of topics – everything from my pursuit of a 600 lb deadlift, opening up my own training studio here in Boston, to the differences between working with athletes and the general population.

HINT: There’s not that much of a difference.

Appearance on the Movement Fix Podcast

There was a time – from 2007-2015 to be exact, my coaching years at Cressey Sports Performance – where I listened to a lot books on cd as well as podcasts.

I had a 45-60 minute commute both ways and used that time to try to make myself smarter. In the years since, however, there aren’t many shows I listen to, because now my commute is an eight minute walk.

Nevertheless, one show that I do listen to is The Movement Fix Podcast hosted by a friend of mine, Dr. Ryan DeBell.

Creating a Positive Training Environment

I had the opportunity to make my second appearance on Ryan’s show recently where we discussed, amongst other things:

  • How to create a positive training environment for your clients.
  • How I’m building a gym where other fitness professionals/coaches can thrive and build their own brand(s) and business(es).
  • Work-life balance of growing a business and growing a family.

Appearance on the Fitness Devil Podcast

Here’s my latest podcast appearance.  And, not for nothing, it includes the SICKEST promotional graphic in the history of ever.

Andrew Coates and Dean Guedo have built The Fitness Devil Podcast into one of the most downloaded health/fitness  podcasts on iTunes.

They’re two dudes who lift heavy things and are well-read, but they also have an uncanny ability to “talk shop” and have unconventional conversations with their guests, which I appreciate very much.

  • Building a business and brand? Check
  • Tips on how to leverage your fitness writing? Check
  • Discussion on how badass my wife is? Check
