Stuff To Read While You’re Pretending To Work: Kicking Off 2016

It feels so weird to be typing the numbers “2016” doesn’t it?

Time truly does fly.

This year will mark a full decade living in Boston for me.

In that time I’ve survived living with Eric Cressey1, helped co-found Cressey Sports Performance, never used the phrase “wicked pissah” once in a sentence, and have had the luxury of witnessing the RedSox win two World Series, the Pats play three SuperBowls (and win one), the Celtics win one NBA Championship, and the Bruins with one NHL Championship.2.

2016 also marks the 30 year anniversary of when ten year old Tony vowed he’d become an honorary member of G.I. Joe.

That didn’t happen. But only because my Mom wouldn’t let me.3 Thanks a lot Mom. You RUINED MY LIFE!!!!!

[slams door]

Anyways, it’s 2016…and I h0pe everyone’s year has started off with a bang; or at the very least some arbitrary Resolution that you’ve already dismissed eight days in….;o)

A Few Things First

I’m a minimalist when it comes to supplementation. I’d tend to fall into the same camp as Alwyn Cosgrove whenever I’m asked about them and  generally respond as follows:

“Supplements are progress enhancers, not progress starters.”

If your current nutrition and training regimen isn’t getting the job done or inching you closer to your goal(s), then taking Gogi Berry Extract laced with diluted unicorn tears and belly button lint from a post-menopausal dragon fire roasted over a live volcano isn’t going to be the “x” factor.

This isn’t to say supplements don’t have a time or place and that there’s little efficacy in their use. That’s just crazy talk.

Five Supplements I Can’t Live Without. Seriously, I’d Die! – Part I

Five Supplements I Can’t Live Without. Seriously, I’d Die! – Part II

However, if you click the links above (DO IT!), you’ll note I don’t recommend anything too out of the ordinary or quack(ish). Actually, nothing is out of the ordinary or quack(ish). Namely, because I’m not an a-hole.

On the same topic, one supplement and company I can’t recommend enough is Athletic Greens.

Ingesting a high-quality greens product daily is just about one of the the best “cover your bases” healthy habits you can implement – outside of the Dan John staples of flossing and wearing your seatbelt.

Real food is going to trump any supplement, but at least here you ensure you ingest a cornucopia of good ingredients for your body in a convenient, quick-n-easy manner. And the best part is that this greens product doesn’t taste like seaweed blasted out of a whale’s rectum.

It actually, you know, tastes good as a stand alone thing.

Nevertheless, it’s something I take daily – as does my wife – and it’s also something I recommend to all my athletes and clients.

As it happens, Athletic Greens is running a special sale at the moment where you get a FREE trial (some travel packets to test the taste out yourself) in addition to a generous discount off the original price.

Updated Speaking Engagements

I finally posted all of my upcoming speaking engagements in 2016 onto my website HERE.

Two that are right around the corner are:

Motivation and Movement Lab (hosted by Mark Fisher Fitness) – I had a BLAST speaking at this event last year, and if it’s any consolation I was up until 3AM the night of. Those people can party.

Complete Hip & Shoulder Workshop w/ Dean Somerset (Toronto) – Dean and I taught this course four times last year, and this will be the first one in 2016.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b78JdzzvARg

For the record (in case you want to take advantage of the Early Bird special) we’ll also be invading SEATTLE in April.

Okay, lets dive into the year’s first list of stuff to read…..

GGS Spotlight: Dr. Lisa Lewis – via GirlsGoneStrong.com

Lets give it up for my wife on being featured on Girls Gone Strong last week. Woo-hoo!

I am incredibly proud of this, and it goes without saying I feel Lisa is someone who has many, many positive and encouraging things to say to help better prepare and empower women on the benefits of strength training.

As a licensed psychologist, Lisa is pretty much a Jedi when it comes to helping people better understand and change their behaviors. Too, she’s very much a champion of peeling back the complicated onion when it comes to each individual’s mindset and why, sometimes, they’re their own worst enemy when it comes to progress in the gym.

This article is just the tip of the iceberg and keep your eyes peeled for her name – along with Artemis Scantalides – as they combine forces for a handful of I Am Not Afraid To Lift Workshops.

Why Tom Brady’s Diet Is Absolutely Absurd – Dr. Mike Roussell

Remember: I live in Boston. So saying anything remotely defamatory of football Jesus is borderline cause for banishment.

However, I felt this was an excellent article by Mike and a fair “assessment” of things.

For another in-depth analysis, check out Adam Bornstein’s take HERE.

Strength Training Program Design 101: Exercise Selection and Order – Jordan Syatt

Jordan did an amazing job at breaking down a very long-winded and complicated topic.

Stuff To Read While You’re Pretending To Work: 12/18/15

Oh, wait….what was that? There’s a Star Wars movie opening today?

Huh, never heard of it.

Okay, I’m kidding.

This was more or less how excited I was when I woke up this morning:

Sadly, and I know this going to sound odd and result in me losing some nerd points, but I am NOT seeing Star Wars today (or this weekend for that matter).

Pre-sale tickets were hard to come by and in order for Lisa and I to see it together we had to default to waiting until Christmas Eve.

So NO SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Enjoy, though, everyone. I’ve heard great things.

Lets jump into this week’s list of stuff to read.

11 Ways to Goblet Squat – Chad Rodgers (ShowMeStrength.com)

Think Goblet squats are boring? Well, they’re not. THEY’RE JUST NOT OKAY!!!!!!!

ACE Technique Series: The Romanian Deadlift – Pete McCall

I actually feel the RDL is more of an advanced movement than people give it credit for, and there are several nuances to it that many people gloss over.

This was a really nice review by Pete.

The Best Workout Plans: Which Program Is Right For You? – JC Deen

Whoa – this article is a master class in how to provide some KILLER content in a way that’s education and easily applicable.

Kudos to JC for a stellar job.

PS

A quick reminder that I will be in Frisco, TX on Sunday, December 27th at Full Throttle Athletics for a 1-day workshop titled The Athletic Shoulder: From Assessment to Badass.

For more information you can go HERE.

Stuff To Read While You’re Pretending To Work: 12/11/15

I’m taking the day off from training clients tomorrow to head to Ranfone Training Systems (CT) to listen to Dan John speak.

My wife had to re-schedule a glass blowing class she had signed us up for months ago, because I was like “babe, it’s Dan John. Come on.”

And I totally got out of it. Thanks Dan John!

1) A quick reminder that I will be in Frisco, TX on Sunday, December 27th doing a 1-day workshop on “The Athletic Shoulder” at Full Throttle Athletics. I’ll discuss things like upper extremity assessment (static and dynamic), why the term “shoulder impingement” is garbage, how to write effective programs around certain shoulder pathologies, coach up a few exercises, and probably talk about Star Wars. Because, Star Wars.

For more information you can go HERE.

2) Here’s your “Save the Date” for the next Motivation and Movement Lab hosted by Mark Fisher Fitness in NYC: Feb 20-21st.

I had a blast earlier this year speaking at this event, and am so honored I was invited back for 2016’s iteration (also featuring Pete Dupuis, of Cressey Sports Performance, Artemis Scantalides of Iron Body Studios, and Steven Ledbetter of Habitry.com)

For more information you can go HERE.

Also, if you attend, be prepared to stay up late. MFF does not mess around.

Lets get to this week’s list:

Pitch-a-Palooza Brain Dump – Matt Blake

Cressey Sports Performance pitching coordinator, Matt Blake, attended last weekend’s Pitch-a-Palooza down in Nashville, TN and shared some things he learned while down there.

Shut Up and Get Strong – Eric Bach

Talk about a perfect title for an article, right? It pretty much reeks “Tony is going to like it.”

Reminds me of some others I read recently I really liked:

“He-Man is Awesome”

“Bacon Is Delicious”

“A Research Thesis to Discover’s Ice-Cube’s Good Day”

Unapologetically Powerful – Jennifer Blake & Jen Sinkler

TODAY (12/11) is the last day to take advantage of the generous discount (half-off) of “the Jens” thorough strength training program.

Ladies: it has everything you need.

  • Detailed programming
  • Extensive (140+) video/exercise library and tutorials
  • Jen Sinkler’s famous lip gloss
  • And, I can’t stress this enough: what I LOVE about this product is that it’s not pretentious. The idea is to place a premium on strength, and not send a message of “Get leaner! Get toned! Burn fat! Lose weight!” Although, many of those things will happen. It gets people to work, and as a result a lot of cool things end up happening.

So whether you’re looking for a little direction yourself or maybe have someone else in mind who might benefit, take advantage now because UP goes up in price at midnight tonight.

A few housekeeping things to hit on before we dive into this week’s list.

2) Eric and Chris Martinez – AKA: the Dynamic Duo – who have written for this site several times, just released a FREE 2-week mini course directed towards newbies (or those who are inundated with too much information) breaking down everything from training and nutrition mistakes to how build better adherence.

I think you should check it out. Go HERE.

3) Lastly, I made a recent appearance on The Fitcast where Kevin and I spoke about my recent transition from Cressey Sports Performance to doing my own thing in Boston. And Fast 7.

Take a listen HERE.

And now lets get to this week’s list of stuff to read.

Learn to Grind – Mike Tuchscherer

Mike is known as one of the more analytical lifters out there. The guy is super meticulous when it comes to mapping out his training and he’s famous for saying smart things like “what gets measured gets managed.”

In this article he discusses the “grind.” Good? Bad? What does it mean?

So Now Kale is Bad For You? – Adam Bornstein

Kale. Freaking KALE is bad for you? It’s absurd to think, right? Well, apparently some journalist wrote an article on why it’s bad. Or, rather, what we put on kale is bad. But the damage is still done.

Adam thinks it’s a shame (and I concur) that someone would write this, and here’s why.

6 Ways to Healthier Shoulders and a Stronger Bench Press – Jennifer Blake & Jen Sinkler

In anticipation of the release of Unapologetically Strong next week, “the Jens” have been sharing a ton of excellent information this week detailing the ins and outs of the “big 3” and getting women fired up to powerlift!

I love it.

NOTE: you’ll need to provide your email in order to watch the video above. But 1) I promise it’s worth it and 2) “the Jens” aren’t a-holes. They won’t spam you.

I had a baby yesterday.

A food baby, that is.

Soooooo  much food yesterday, as I’m sure many reading can commiserate with.

But so worth it.

I’m going to keep this one short today because Lisa and I have a full day a head of us…starting off with a big lift at my Alma Mater, SUNY Cortland, to help offset the insulin shock my body is in at the moment.

And then, lets not kid ourselves, today is all about Thanksgiving dinner leftovers

High Tensile Strength – Dean Somerset

You only have two days left to take advantage of the sale price for this awesome resource.

For what it would cost you for a good steak you can get six months of semi-customized programming from one of the best coaches around.

And you’ll get stronger, more mobile, feel better, and (probably) be able to cut diamonds with your pecs. I think I read that somewhere in the manual.

But don’t quote me on that.

Stuff To Read While You’re Pretending To Work: 11/20/15

I just spent the past two days hanging out with my friend, and savage, Todd Bumgardner.

[NOTE: if you’re not already reading his stuff and/or stalking following him on social media, you should.]

He was in town for a workshop he was putting on at one of the Equinox locations here in Boston where he spoke to a group of 20+ trainers on “The Art of Coaching” as well as breaking down some common barbell regressions, progressions, and lateralizations.

In exchange for letting him crash at my place he let me “wedding crash” his workshop. He’s a really, really, really good coach, and I learned a lot from his presentation – stuff I’ll be writing more on in later posts4– but the real treat was being able to hang out with an awesome human being for a few days. I love being around people who are passionate about what they do and are equally as eager to share knowledge as they are in attaining it.

We talked lifting heavy stuff, ate dead animal flesh, and also bro-fisted roughly 308 times (+/- 2):

A still shot from a 10-minute video Todd filmed for his Strength Faction group; a community of coaches and personal trainers who get coached themselves on program design, exercise technique, and, of course, the art of bro-fisting.

Needless to say, Todd’s good people and you should check his stuff out.

ALSO

Quick reminder: I’ll be doing a 1-day workshop on “Assessment to Badass” at Full Throttle Athletics in Frisco, TX on Sunday, December 27th.

Me + Shoulders + black lights & smoke machines = best 1-day workshop EVER.

I’m en route to LA as this goes live, via Virgin America Airlines.

Look at me all fancy pants.

It’s like a spaceship. Except not in space.

Anyways, I have nothing of importance to say so lets get right to this week’s list shall we?

Shifting In and Out of Patterns: A Discussion on Extension, Neutrality, and Performance – Dr. Pat Davidson

Pat is a savage (and author of one of the best training manuals in recent memory, MASS. The title alone should tell you all you need to know).

I really appreciated this article as it speaks to some of the reasons why PRI – breathing patterns – is so valuable in a strength & conditioning setting.

5 Thoughts On Off-Season Baseball Training – Mike Robertson

My name is Tony Gentilcore, I’m known for training baseball players, and I approve this message. Mike hit a home run with this article. He threw it right down the pipe. You could say this article is “a can of corn” in terms of how applicable and easy the information is.

Too many baseball puns? My bad.

Suffice it to say his break down of the importance of the serratus anterior is worth the read alone.

2x Bodyweight Deadlift: Unreasonable Standard or Realistic Goal – Artemis Scantalides

Artemis asked a bunch of strength coaches their opinion on the 2x bodyweight deadlift marker. Is there merit to the goal? Or is it a bunch of nonsense?

s3 Method: A Programming Framework For Improving Speed, Size, and Strength

TODAY (11/13) is your last chance to purchase Nick Tumminello’s latest resource at a heavily discounted price. I love Nick’s work and he’s someone I always learn something from.

This is a very thorough resource covering THREE modules that will not only give you a deep look into Nick’s approach to program design, but give you tons of tools to make you more rounded fitness professional.

As a quick reminder: Dean Somerset and I will be in LA (Anaheim) next weekend (Nov. 14th-15th) for our Complete Interpretive Dance of Lord of the Rings Workshop Complete Shoulder & Hip Workshop.

Not to get all emotional or anything, but here’s an email I received this morning from an attendee of our Chicago workshop:
Dean and Tony – You both provided an incredible weekend of instruction and mentoring.  You guys were so fabulous and enormous credits to our industry. I am honored to have experienced you both. Thanks for inspiring me to always strive to get better!!!  Thank you.
– Sean A.

Dean and I try our best to make this workshop equal parts informative and applicable to coaches and trainers (as well as general fitness enthusiasts), and it’s always amazing to get feedback like that

What Do the Data Really Say About Essential Oils? – Dr. John Berardi

I’ll admit that when I first saw the title (and read the initial few paragraphs of the article) I thought to myself, “OH. MY. GOD…Berardi has gone all Poliquin on us.”

Spruce oil, peppermint, lavender… all may play a role in increasing testosterone levels and help reduce chronic pain and inflammation?

What’s next? Telling me swallowing a teaspoon of cinnamon will increase my vertical jump 15%5 or that I can adopt a pet Liger on Craigslist?

But then I kept reading. And before I knew it I was bathing in a tub of peppermint.

Okay, kidding.

But in all seriousness my interest was piqued, and I respect the way John explains his own anecdotal experience while at the same time discussing the science behind using essential oils.

See what you think.

Note to Self: be sure to look into stock on lavender scented candles on Monday.

4 Ways Modern Life is Making You Fat – Mike Sheridan

No big surprises here, but it’s a message that needs to be re-stated time and time and time again.

Off the Floor: A Manual For Deadlift Domination – David Dellanave

If someone asked me “what’s your go to resource for beginners (or anyone) to really learn the deadlift” I’d point them in the direction of this manual.

Very thorough resource with programming included as well as an extensive video database (and a bunch of add-ons and bonuses). And it’s gluten free.

The sale ends TONIGHT (11/6). Soooo, yeah…take advantage of it, if saving money is your thing.

I kid you not, as I type these words I am sitting in my apartment waiting for the delivery guys from Sleepy’s to drop off the new mattress Lisa and I bought the other night.

Not that any of you reading are in any way interested in mine and Lisa’s sleep quality6, but she’s had the same mattress for about a decade (and we’ve been together for six years), so it was time to upgrade.

We walked to the local Sleepy’s down the street from our apartment and spent a good two hours test driving a few mattresses7 and narrowed it down to the one that’s supposed to be arriving between 8-12PM today (or when hell freezes over, whichever comes first).

We’re totally going to be asleep at like 6 tonight. Can’t wait!

A few things before I get to this week’s list of stuff to read:

Last weekend marked my official “start date” for my new solo venture.8 I’m sub-leasing space from Run Strong Studio in Brookline, MA (Boston) and training people out of there. Here’s a little flavor for what it looks like:

A little flavor for what the new studio space looks like. Meeting clients for first time this AM. Hope they like 90s hip hop.

A video posted by Tony Gentilcore (@tonygentilcore) on

Rebecca – the woman who owns the studio – has been awesome. She’s a doctor who trains people on the side (mostly runners) in a rehab setting. When we met for the first time in person I saw she had a copy of Gray Cook’s Movement on her desk and she also dropped a few Mike Boyle and PRI references. I knew right away she was eating at the cool kids table.

Since our first meeting to now she’s allowed me to “vomit” strength and conditioning and bring in a bunch of equipment into her space. The result is what you see above.

It’s nothing fancy pants, but it’s perfect for what I’m looking to do: coach people, write awesome programs, and make them into badasses.

The first week has gone well and I’ve already had several people perform their initial assessment and are primed to get after it. If you’re in Boston and want to check things out for yourself you can go HERE.

ALSO

As a reminder: Dean Somerset and I will be in Los Angeles (Anaheim) at CrossFit 714 for our Complete Shoulder and Hip Workshop the weekend of November 14th.

That’s in two weeks, yo. For more information you can go HERE.

[Cue obligatory “this is why Tony & Dean are the awesome” testimonial here]

“Being cynical of the workshop frenzy in our industry has made me extremely picky with how I spend my time and money with my educational efforts. Tony and Dean presented our group with simple and concise information that will be easy to implement into my business’ daily operations.

The assessments and corrective strategies that I learned this weekend will be very useful in any size setting which translates to me being able to spend more time growing my business while delivering an effective product. If you value your time and the quality of your work, this is a must-attend event.”

It’s articles like this as to why I consider Examine.com one of my GO TO resources for un-biased nutrition and supplementation information.

Last week (another) major story broke reminding everyone that red-meat is going to kill us all. It happens every year, it’s nothing new, really, it’s not, and the mainstream media latches onto it and apocalizes (<– Yep, I just made up a word) it.

Some big things happening in the next 48 hours.

For starters I’ll officially be open for business and taking on new clients at my new spot in Boston. I’ve spent the past few weeks getting my ducks in a row purchasing equipment and getting some semblance of “systems” set in place to help organize things.

But mostly it’s been all about taking this:

And turning it into this:

BOOM.

A photo posted by Tony Gentilcore (@tonygentilcore) on

It’s like my very own Transformer!

I’ll be updating the website soon to better highlight what services I’ll be offering in Boston, but for now if you’re reading this and wondering to yourself, “huh, I wonder what it would be like to have Tony train me9” you can shoot me an email at: [email protected] (or use the Contact function on the homepage).

UPDATE: actually, you can go HERE for more information.

Also, I’ll be making a cameo appearance at Legacy Strength in Floral Park, NY on Sunday (10/25) to do a 1-day workshop on shoulder shenanigans for a group of personal trainers and coaches. It’ll actually be my first time driving to NYC (and not taking public transportation), so FML.

I am, however, really looking forward to Sunday.

And lastly, speaking of speaking engagements, I’d like to run something past all of you.

Lisa, my wife, is an accomplished psychologist (with a doctorate in Sports Psychology) and she and I have been toying with the idea of offering a 1-day workshop tentatively titled “Kick It Up a Notch.”

[NOTE (slight brag fest): she actually jumped in when I was down in Australia this past March and spoke to the group of trainers/coaches on mindset and how to better communicate with clients. They ate it up. She’s also speaking alongside Artemis Scantalides in a few weeks at the I Am Not Afraid To Lift (Boston) Workshop. There are a handful of spots still available. Hint, hint].

Helping athletes/clients on the physical component is one thing – most trainers and coaches are well prepared for that. However, it’s a whole different ball of wax when mindset and the mental component is thrown into the mix.

What the two of us have been thinking is combining a workshop where I speak to how to progress our clients in the weight room (discussing exercise progressions/regressions, performance on key lifts) and Lisa speaks to how to help our clients with mindset, inner dialogue, and the mental component.

Do you feel there would be ANY interest in something like this?

I do. But I’d like to see if I’m right or if it’s just wishful thinking on my part.

Without further ado, lets get to this week’s list.

Head & Shin Position In the Deadlift – Tim Henriques

Tim’s an excellent coach and wrote one of the best books on powerlifting I’ve ever read titled, coincidentally enough, All About Powerlifting.

This was a fantastic article breaking down two often debated cues on the deadlift concerning ideal chin and shin position. Really, really good stuff.

The only way this article could have been more good is if it won an arm wrestling match vs. Zeus.

5 Critical Coaching Cues, Confused – Greg Robins

Keeping with the “lifting heavy stuff” theme, in this article Greg discusses five common coaching cues with the Big 3 that are often misunderstood or confused.

I particularly liked #1.

Why Strength Training Is Crucial For Me – Lindsay Somerset

Somerset? That name sounds familiar.

Lindsay is Dean’s wife, and an accomplished endurance athlete. In this very important post she describes why strength training has been a crucial component to her success as a competitive athlete.

Some Bonus Stuff

1. I’m really excited about the upcoming release of Strength Expert Secrets.featuring the likes of Dan John, Tim Henriques, Matt Kroc, Jordan Syatt, Dean Somerset, Josh Bryant, Bud Jefferies, and me.

As part of the pre-launch you can sign up to receive 8 FREE preview videos of the product. All you need to do is provide your name and email address HERE.

To serve as a teaser, here’s my video:

2. For anyone looking to improve their writing skills, I picked up a really good book yesterday: Everybody Writes: Your Go-To Guide To Creating Ridiculously Good Content.
