STUFF TO CHECK OUT FIRST

1. Strategic Strength Workshop – Boston (March 2022 w/ Luke Worthington)

This coming March Luke Worthington and I will be putting on our popular Strategic Strength Workshop in Boston, MA. Check out the full details HERE.

  • Payment plan option
  • CEUs will be offered
  • I’ll probably talk about deadlifts…;o)

2. COACHED: Raise the Bar Conference

I’m excited to announce that I will be part of the Raise the Bar Conference. An event focused on the missing links in our industry: Communication, collaboration, connection, behavioral psychology, business & marketing skills, and much more.

When: February 4th-6th, 2022
Where: BioFit Performance, Oviedo, FL (Orlando area)

And more importantly who? Who will be presenting at this event?

I gotta say: This is undoubtedly one of the most stacked line-ups I have ever seen; even more than the 1990 Oakland Athletics.

Virtual slots are infinite, however IN-PERSON slots are now limited, act quickly – HERE.

3. Strategic Strength Workshop: London, UK – April 23-24th (w/ Luke Worthington)

To serve as a “double-feature” of sorts, since Luke is coming to Boston in March we figured it was only fair for me to venture back to London as well.

This workshop IS happening on the weekend provided in central London, however we have yet to cement a venue.

Stay tuned.

That said…

4. Coaching Competency Workshop: Leeds, UK – May, 1 2022

I’m pumped for this one. Every workshop I’ve put on in England (outside of one I did in Bath back in 2017) has taken place in London.

I’m excited to head north and visit Leeds!

STUFF TO READ WHILE YOU’RE PRETENDING TO WORK

The Junk Food Delusion – Dani Shugart

Unhealthy Junk Food

It’s fashionable of late for some “fitness experts and influencers” to tout junk food as no big deal.

And, generally, it isn’t. Personally, I love junk food (especially pizza and ice-cream) and eat it often. Also, at the end of the day, so long the calories ingested match YOUR goals and YOUR preferences everyone should be left alone and do whatever the fuck it is they want to do.

That being said, let’s not kid ourselves into thinking junk food is “healthy” or that there’s no cost to doing business.

Nice read from Dani here.

The “How to Lose Great Coaches” Starter Pack – Missy Mitchell-McBeth

Midsection of basketball coach with stopwatch

Ohhhhhh1 snap.

Shots have been fired (right on Missy!)

Why Posture and Pain do not Simply Relate – Ben Cormack

Male osteopath doing a postural evaluation

As I’ve stated in the past:

“Posture is nothing more than a position.”

Just because someone presents as “not mirroring what a textbook says is perfect posture,” doesn’t mean they’re walking ball of dysfunction.

Guess what? We don’t live in textbooks!

Posture is the result of the TASK being asked of the body and the LOAD being placed upon it. Whether it’s “bad” or “passable” is a hodge-podge of variables and it depends’. You can’t predict whether or not a certain type of posture is deleterious to the low back more than the Easter Bunny.

1. (Even More) Complete Shoulder & Hip Blueprint – 2019 Locations & Dates

Philadelphia, PA: April 27-28th (<– EARLY BIRD rate ending in 3 weeks).

Edmonton, Alberta, Canada: May 25-26th

Sydney, Australia: July 13-14th

Melbourne, Australia: July 20-21st

This workshop will piggyback on the material Dean Somerset and I covered in the original Complete Shoulder & Hip Blueprint.

With this iteration, though, we’ll be going a bit deeper into the coaching and programming side of things:

  • How to program around common injuries.
  • How to “connect” the appropriate exercises to the client/athlete.
  • How to really add value with your assessment process.
  • How to squat and deadlift like a boss.

Find out more details HERE.

2. Coaching Competency Workshop – Raleigh, NC

I’ll be in Raleigh, NC THIS WEEKEND putting on my popular Coaching Competency workshop

Full details (date, location, itinerary, how to register) can be found HERE.

3. Strategic Strength Workshop – Boston, MA

Luke and I did this workshop last summer in London and figured it’s only fair to bring it State side. Combined we have 30+ years of coaching experience (I.e., one Mike Boyle or Dan John) and this workshop will be two days where we uncover every nook and cranny as it relates to how we assess our clients/athletes and how we best prepare them for the rigors of every day life/sport.

This will be a unique opportunity for people to learn from myself, but especially Luke, who I think is one of the best and brightest coaches I know.

For more information and to register you can go HERE.

4) The Ultimate Pull-Up Challenge

Lil’ Kim is the queen of hip-hop.

Meghan Callaway is the queen of pull-ups.

She’s running a pull-up challenge this month (starts Monday, March 18th) and everyone who participates will receive a FREE PDF outlining exercises and tips to improve your pull-ups.

Plus you get to be part of a motivating challenge.

Also, on an aside: Meghan’s popular Ultimate Pull-Up Program will be on sale at 25% off the regular price throughout the duration of the challenge (and I think the offer is available right now).

30 Days of Shoulders. . Day 1: Two Common Row Technique Errors. . There are a lot of things to consider when it comes to why someone’s shoulder may be bothering them: poor soft tissue quality, programming imbalance, weak this, overactive that, they wore blue on a Wednesday. I don’t know. . However, more often than not, and something I feel gets overlooked often, is how someone performs a certain exercise. . Take the DB Row for example. It’s not uncommon to see one of two (if not both) mistakes being made when someone performs the exercise: . 1. Too much glenohumeral extension (or the “more ROM must be better” scenario). . 2. Not allowing the scapulae to move around the rib cage. . Let that shit move, yo. . Address or consider those two things and I’m willing to bet your shoulders may feel better.

STUFF TO READ WHILE  YOU’RE PRETENDING TO WORK

Brie Larson and Becoming Your Own Superhero in Real Life  – Josh Hillis

The main message I got from reading this (and it’s a profound I am always trying to champion myself): it’s more about the PROCESS than the  OUTCOME.

Trans Athletes: The Death of  Women’s Sports – Dani Shugart

WHEW- this one was a doozy and a topic I can”t imagine how hard it was to write about. Dani did so with tact,  grace, and  professionalism.

Strength Training for Runners:  It’s a  MUST – Menachem Brodie

There’s no shortage of myths and naysayers when it comes to attaching strength training to an endurance athlete. I want to give Menachem a hug so freakin bad for writing this article.

Well done!

Stuff To Read While You’re Pretending To Work: 10/2/15

I’ve been a little lackadaisical with updating the blog this week, which I apologize for. I’ve only put up three posts instead of my usual 4-5.

Such a slacker.

Not to be all cryptic or anything, but I do have some big news to report that I’ll be sharing in more detail sometime next week.

Hint: Tony’s Techno Tuesday2 will be in full effect.

GRAB YOUR GLOWSTICKS AND BODYPAINT AND LETS GO SQUAT!!!!!!

Before I get into this week’s list of stuff to read – and on a completely unrelated note – how excited is everyone to go see The Marian this weekend?

Ever since I read the book a year ago and then heard the news that both Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, Black Hawk Down) and Matt motherfuckin Damon were attached to direct and star, I’ve had to do all I can to not allow my brain to spontaneously combust via a seismic nerdgasm.

It’s been getting rave reviews – 92% “fresh” on RottenTomatoes.com – and well, Matt Damon can do no wrong.

Another movie I’m really excited to see that opens in wide-release this weekend is Sicario. Starring Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, and Benicio del Toro – and directed by Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners) – it looks pretty spectacular and eerily similar (at least stylistically) to the movie Traffic. This too has been getting a ton of positive buzz and reviews.

Also

As a quick reminder, Dean Somerset and I will be putting on our Complete Shoulder & Hip Workshop two more times in 2015.

CHICAGO (October 17-18th) at Rebell Strength & Conditioning.

LOS ANGELES (November 14-15th) at CrossFit 714 in Anaheim.

CEU’s will be available for both workshops.

The 5 People Every Lifter Needs To Avoid (Plus 5 People You Need in Your Life) – Dani Shugart

The popular saying goes that everyone is the average of the five people they hang out with this most. This is true.

It’s also true that if the five people you hang out with the most are the type of people other people would want to shove into a live volcano, you probably shouldn’t be hanging out with them.

Review of Complete Shoulder & Hip Workshop (What I Learned From Dean and Tony) – Stevan Freeborn

This was an excellent review from an attendee from last weekend’s event in St. Louis. I’m not linking to it as a way to gloat.

Okay, maybe a little.

Stevan covers A LOT of material in this post, and does a stellar job articulating many “take aways” that everyone can use at the gym today.

Are GMOs Bad For Your Health? – Helen Kollias (via Precision Nutrition)

GMOs are evil.

They’re nothing but inedible Frankenfood.

Or are they? Enlightening and FAIR conversation in this article.

Stuff to Read While You’re Pretending to Work: 6/30/14

Not to rub it in or anything, but as this post is going live I’m in route heading to Cancun, Mexico for a week of:

A.  Vitamin D intoxication
B.   Poolside reading
C.   Crushing fresh guacamole and chips. And tacos. And nachos.*
D.  Tequila**
E.   Reacting scenes from the movie Desperado. FYI:  any guy who was a teenager when this movie came out, knows EXACTLY why this movie rules. Hint:  Salma Hayek

Suffice it to say, it’s going to be hoooooooooooot, and Lisa, a Florida girl, is going to be soaking up every last second while I’ll probably be underneath an umbrella the entire time, wearing 10,000 SPF sunblock.

I’ll still be updating the blog this week.  Don’t worry, you can’t get rid of me that easily.

Connecting With Cressey – Ashley Crosby

This was a really nice write-up by Cape Cod Baseball on what the “Cressey Experience” is like.

Everything I F***** Up While Trying to Eat Like Gwyneth for a Week – Lindy West

Busting on Gwyneth is almost too easy at times. Everything from her and her husband’s (Coldplay lead vocalist, Chris Martin) uppity way of “uncoupling” to her assertion that water has “feelings,” provides ample ammunition.

Far worse is the notion that people deem her an “expert” and are willing to take nutritional advice from her.

It’s akin to me writing a book on knitting or paper mache or how to fly an F-15 fighter jet.

But back to Gwyneth. All of this “street cred” despite the fact she’s been diagnosed with osteopenia (a precursor to osteoporosis), in no small part due to her dietary decisions.

Anyways, I thought this was a hilarious commentary which ended up taking a turn I didn’t expect.  Kudos to the author for an honest and heartfelt review in the end.

On a quick aside, since we’re on the topic of Gwyneth, we might as well toss her BFF, Tracy Anderson into the fire as well.  This.  Was. Precious.

10 Mistakes Women Make With Diets – Dani Shugart

Slow clap to Dani for writing this.  Please share with your friends.

And that’s it for today.  Excuse me while I go hyperventilate into a brown paper bag (god, I hate flying!!!)

* And quesadillas.  Doesn’t matter….it’s all Paleo, right?

** (hahahahahahahahaha.  Yeah, right. The second I drink some tequila I’ll turn into the “is this real life?” kid.)
