I’ll be back in the city that never sleeps this Fall to put on my popular Coaching Competency workshop. Albeit this will be condensed version (five hours instead of seven); a fitness amuse bouche if you will.

Honestly a better title for this workshop would be: From Assessment to Clients.

I’ll go into detail on how to create better “buy in” with potential clients, in addition to creating a better (current) client experience starting with the assessment to programming suggestions.

Here’s another gleaming example of how TRAINING is corrective. . First picture shows a clear asymmetry and lack of Shoulder flexion on the left side. What’s the culprit? . It could be a few things: capsular issue, lack of scapular rotation, soft tissue restriction, lack of lumbo-pelvic control, it’s Wednesday? I don’t know. . I have to respect my lane and understand it’s not my job as a strength & conditioning coach to diagnose. . I can, however, assess movement, use my knowledge of anatomy, and perform a little trial and error to see if I can improve things. . What actions have to happen at the scapulae to get the arms overhead? . – Upward rotation – Protraction – Posterior tilt . Emily wasn’t getting much upward rotation on that left side, so I had to think about what muscles help with that action? . – Upper and lower traps – Serratus . I noticed she also had a more depressed shoulder girdle as a whole; her clavicular angle was more horizontal rather than having a slight upward grade. . I surmised her UPPER traps needed some attention. They often get a bad rap and are avoided like a Coldplay concert. We often forget the upper traps are a major player in UPWARD ROTATION, not to mention help with scapular elevation…both of which, in my eyes, Emily could use some more of. . I didn’t get over corrective with her and have her start performing some voodoo shenanigans like tap her big toe three times while flossing her teeth with a strain of hair from a Hippogriff. I didn’t have her perform a laundry list of correctives that would likely bore her to tears. . Nope, I had her TRAIN and just modified a few things. We did: . – Landmine Presses with a Shrug/Reach – Face Pulls in an upwardly rotated position (so the upper traps were engaged) – And instead of performing movements that would pull her into more shoulder depression and downward rotation (deadlifts, farmer carries, etc) we opted for Landmine Squats, Zercher RDLs, and Hip Thrusts. . In short: we turned shit on (upper traps) and trained movements that (likely) wouldn’t feed into the root causes of her symptoms. . The second pic was taken at the end of her session. I’m Gandalf.

We made it back to Boston this past Wednesday night from our two-week European trip, and I’m juuuust getting over the jet-lag hangover.

Germany (Bonn, Cologne) —-> Netherlands (Eindhoven, Utrecht, Amsterdam) —-> London.

It was a lovely trip and I’m always sad to leave Europe, but we were ready to come back if for nothing else so Julian (our 1.5 year old) could back on a normal schedule.

Tuning Tension: Letting It Go – Noah Harrison

A few months ago I listened to Noah speak on the topic of muscular tension and how most trainees have zero comprehension as to just how integral it is for performance in the weight room.

Moreover, the strategies one can incorporate to increase muscular tension are fairly simple.

It was a very interesting presentation and I asked if he’d be up to writing a little sumthin, sumthin for the site.

He was. And HERE’s what he wrote.

The article linked to above is more or less a “part II,” the other side of the equation (what to do to decrease muscular tension), and something that helps bring the entire conversation full-circle.

Dear Personal Trainers: Stop Lying About Your Career – Lee Boyce

I sometimes have a hard time differentiating the nefarious politicians from the shady personal trainers.

Both camps, it seems, will say or do anything to appear more important than they really are and to get a leg up on their competition.

I remember when I used to work in a swanky commercial gym here in Boston The Rock once asked me where a certain piece of equipment was located.

I answered (and immediately started hyperventilating into a brown paper bag).

I then moved on with my life. What I didn’t do was then proceed to brag about I used to train The Rock, when all I really did was point him towards the lat pulldown machine.

Fit pros need to stop being braggarts.

Bridging the Gap From Rehab to Performance – Sue Falsone

OTP Publications sent me a copy of this book a few weeks ago, and I ended up stuffing it into my suitcase for my European trip hoping to snake a few peeks here and there between Julian naps.

I’ve always been a fan of Sue’s work and this is no exception.

Definitely worth the price.

6 Months Ago I Had to Learn to Walk Again. Here’s What I Discovered – Lee Boyce

My man Lee Boyce, a friend and colleague, ruptured both his knee tendons playing in a pick-up game of basketball earlier this year.

Ruptured….both….knee….tendons.

I.e., He couldn’t fucking walk.

Not only did he basically keep the entire ordeal to himself – he purposely didn’t tell many people about it3 – but he made mental notes along the way to write this amazing piece.

His resiliency astounds me.

I Did a Podcast With Lee Boyce

I’ve been woefully vacant with writing content of late, and I am so sorry.

Life. Is. Busy.

As I type these words I’m sitting in Logan Airport waiting for my flight to Philly where I’ll be speaking at the Mid-Atlantic NSCA Conference this weekend.

Who ever thought that having a 10-month old cruising around the apartment would be time consuming?

Oh, and it’s my Birthday today.4

So, yeah….unfortunately, writing has been taking a back seat to other shenanigans of late. I hope to be picking up the pace soon though.

All of this isn’t to imply I haven’t been busy in other avenues of fitness. Last week I was invited back onto the Cut the S#!t Get Fit Podcast with host Rafal Matuszewski.

This time, though, there was a special circumstance.

Last year Lisa and I had the privilege of presenting together in Austin, TX and London, UK, and we’re elated to be heading to Toronto in about a month to pick up where we left off.

In a nutshell I speak to a little assessment talk, program design, and breaking down technique on a few common lifts such as the squat, deadlift, get-up, and BOSU ball lunges (<— kidding), and Lisa speaks to more of the mindset side of the equation and how we can help build better rapport and “buy in” with our clients/athletes. It’s a monthly research review specifically curated for strength and physique athletes, coaches, and enthusiasts. Every issue of MASS is created by Greg Nuckols, Eric Helms, and Mike Zourdos.

I hate reading research. I can think of a number of things I’d rather do – wash my face with broken glass, go to a One Direction concert, talk about my feelings with my wife, so on and so forth. I’m not kidding, I hate it.

This is the perfect way for me to stay on top of the game without making my brain hurt: have other smart people I respect a ton break things down and interpret things for me….;o)

Hip Flexor Tightness: The Most Common Error in Stretching – Dave Tilley

My head hurt from shaking in agreement so much while reading this article. This is something I harp all…the…time with clients/athletes and even when I speak to fitness professionals on the topic.

You (likely) don’t have “tight” hip flexors. And, how you’re stretching them is only feeding the problem in the first place.

I wish this dreamboat was my doctor…..;o)

This is a message I can get behind.

The health/wellness industry is all about being more REACTIVE than PROACTIVE. I get it: much of a doctor’s education is in treating ailments with medicine and not with the iron, and that’s cool. But I’d be remiss not to point out we’d likely get people sustained results by educating and nudging them to workout rather than pop pills.

Always a good day at the office when a client hits a PR. Here’s Shukri hitting 355 lbs, and he makes it look easy. I started working with Shukri three months ago and we had to deconstruct his deadlift. His previous PR was 350 lbs, but in his own words it ” would make your eyes bleed.” He liked to pull conventional, but I switched him to modified Sumo as it allowed him to maintain a more upright torso and didn’t require as much upper back strength, a weak link we’ve been working on. With tweaks in hand, we had to revamp his approach starting at 225 lbs. Every week we focused on doing more work. Weird, linear periodization works…? This PR was a legit PR. Solid technique. The road to 400 is within reach.

It’s basically the closest you’re going to get to training with me at CORE without actually stepping foot inside the facility. Each month I write programs that’ll help give you structure and purpose with your own training. You log on with your own CORE Online app, watch me demonstrate exercise, and you get diesel.

1. Inside scoop: many of the most popular classes/brands that are popular with women only allow women of a certain body-type to take those classes. Also, some people pick the right parents. They look how they look because that’s how they look, not because of some class.

2. Many of those same classes follow the same ideas and principles of successful bodybuilders. GASP! The exact opposite of what they stand for.

Was supposed to hit some heavy front squats today but felt like a bag of d**ks today and opted to do some arm a glute shenanigans instead. One exercise I played around with was this gem I picked up from @kelliedavisfit – Band Reverse Hip Extension w/ Abduction. Since most people don’t have access to a reverse hyper doing them off a bench works well. Hold onto bench with hips hanging off edge with band around the knees. Perform a “frogger” (abduct the hips, keep feet together) and then straighten out legs using the glutes to lock out. Hold for a 2-3s count and repeat. Aim for 10-15 reps. Or 87. I don’t care. Your glutes will feel the buuuuuurrrrrnnnn. I suspect my ladies at CORE will want these in their next program…? Props to my mother-in-law for the camera work…ha.
