We’ve had a sick toddler on our hands the past few days (hence the lack of content this week) and our apartment is basically a Petri dish of whateverthef*** at the moment.

He’s feeling better – and back at daycare – but, yeah, that wasn’t fun.

A few months ago Adam Rees of GRIT Gym and his girlfriend, Rachel, stopped by CORE to hang out and to so that I could take a look at Rachel.

She had been having some hip issues and wanted me to take a look at her deadlift and squat.

A technique audit if you will.

They ended up making this video to document their experience.1

3. Appearance on The Strength Running Podcast

I was invited back onto the Strength Running Podcast hosted by Jason Fitzgerald.

It’s a on-going battle, but I do feel the tides are turning and that many runners are starting to understand the importance of strength training (and how it should serve to compliment their running).

Jason and I discuss a bevy of things in this episode, but we dial in on the deadlift and why it’s such an integral movement to learn.

In today’s edition of “shit I saw on the internet and am now going to steal it,” this is a deadbug variation that loosely mimics one I saw @vernongriffith4 perform using a @stickmobility . . The difference: . 1. I don’t have access to a @stickmobility , but instead am using a “bendier” PVC stick. . 2. I had @lilew13 (my wife) face the opposite direction because the stick was shorter. . This is a great way to really lock in the concept of the deadbug: stabilized spine while moving through the extremities. . Simply press the stick INTO the wall to engage the anterior core more. For those who struggle with this idea, the stick works like a charm. . And yes, before anyone asks, a band works well here too. However this is a nice option if you don’t have access to a band. . And, honestly, because you have to press into the wall (or the stick falls), I find this variation works better to get the abs to turn on. . ALSO: massive kudos to Lisa for making things awkward AF at the end.

One of the highest compliments I can receive as a coach is when other coaches hire me to be their coach. . Coaches need coaches too. . Here’s my client @jessmschour from last night. . We’ve been troubleshooting some hip shenanigans and trying to come up with ways to “feel” her glutes more during certain exercises, like deadlifts. . She’s pretty freakin strong: her best pull is 350 lbs with a straight bar. Alas, I wanted to try something a bit different last night. . This is an exercise I stole from @mcconnell_athletics and it worked beautifully. . I wrapped a jump stretch band around two pegs in the power rack and then placed the band through the handle of a KB. . Hello Glute O’clock.

I’d like to sit here and say I have something cool planned today – like watching a Jason Bourne marathon, or, I don’t know, going to Sears – but, honestly, it’s just a normal Friday for me today.

Writing programs, writing this blog, training, and then maybe a celebratory pizza…;o)

Tomorrow, however, is the real show. My wife and I have a date at Del Frisco’s and then we’re going to go see Widows.

Regardless of the choices we face or the events that happen throughout the day, we have two lenses we can choose to view them from. In one hand is the lens that distorts events as being “bad luck” or “shit” or “unfortunate.” In the other hand is the lens that homes in on what has happened, what is — free from distortion or distraction — and gives us the power to glimpse and choose to see “beauty” or “good” or, at the very least, reality. I consider it a privilege I’m allowed the opportunity to travel the world to present and speak to other fitness professionals. . This weekend marks my last “work” travel of the year; heading to Los Angeles to present the (Even More) Complete Shoulder and Hip Blueprint with @dsomerset1 . All told, this year, I’ve presented in LA, NYC, Washington DC, Boston, Dallas, Houston, San Jose, Vancouver, Victoria Island, Bonn (Germany), London, and Ljubljana (Slovenia). . 2019 has me headed to London, Vancouver, Edmonton, Philadelphia, Chicago, Detroit, NYC, LA, Dallas, Houston, Sydney (Australia), and Singapore. . I hope this doesn’t come across as me being a braggart. Growing up in a small town in central NY that’s surrounded by dairy farms and corn fields, (still) doesn’t have a traffic light, and nothing exciting happens outside of the occasional carnival stopping through, I never would have imagined I’d be seeing the places I’ve seen, experiencing different cultures, and meeting so many interesting and eclectic people. . So, simply, thank you, everyone – my wife, family, friends, colleagues, “fans,” Matt Damon (because, why not?) – for your support. . It’s pretty fucking cool.

Here’s another gleaming example of how TRAINING is corrective. . First picture shows a clear asymmetry and lack of Shoulder flexion on the left side. What’s the culprit? . It could be a few things: capsular issue, lack of scapular rotation, soft tissue restriction, lack of lumbo-pelvic control, it’s Wednesday? I don’t know. . I have to respect my lane and understand it’s not my job as a strength & conditioning coach to diagnose. . I can, however, assess movement, use my knowledge of anatomy, and perform a little trial and error to see if I can improve things. . What actions have to happen at the scapulae to get the arms overhead? . – Upward rotation – Protraction – Posterior tilt . Emily wasn’t getting much upward rotation on that left side, so I had to think about what muscles help with that action? . – Upper and lower traps – Serratus . I noticed she also had a more depressed shoulder girdle as a whole; her clavicular angle was more horizontal rather than having a slight upward grade. . I surmised her UPPER traps needed some attention. They often get a bad rap and are avoided like a Coldplay concert. We often forget the upper traps are a major player in UPWARD ROTATION, not to mention help with scapular elevation…both of which, in my eyes, Emily could use some more of. . I didn’t get over corrective with her and have her start performing some voodoo shenanigans like tap her big toe three times while flossing her teeth with a strain of hair from a Hippogriff. I didn’t have her perform a laundry list of correctives that would likely bore her to tears. . Nope, I had her TRAIN and just modified a few things. We did: . – Landmine Presses with a Shrug/Reach – Face Pulls in an upwardly rotated position (so the upper traps were engaged) – And instead of performing movements that would pull her into more shoulder depression and downward rotation (deadlifts, farmer carries, etc) we opted for Landmine Squats, Zercher RDLs, and Hip Thrusts. . In short: we turned shit on (upper traps) and trained movements that (likely) wouldn’t feed into the root causes of her symptoms. . The second pic was taken at the end of her session. I’m Gandalf.

Here’s a great example of how to “fix” someone swaying to any one side during their squat (and more importantly how accepting our individual asymmetries can be a game changer in terms of how our squats look and feel). . This is my good friend and colleague @drak_25. He’s a strong dude and competes in powerlifting. . I received a text from him asking about his squat and how he’s been having a hard time preventing his weight from shifting to the right. . He referred to a tactic both @dsomerset1 and I are fans of and something we discussed in depth in our Complete Shoulder & Hip Blueprint…experimenting with an asymmetrical stance and how we “textbook technique” should not be the standard to go by. . We know that everyone’s anatomy and leverages are different. Some people have acetabulums pointing one way (anteverted/retroverted) and some people may require more hip abduction or external rotation to hit a certain depth. It may even behoove some to adopt more of a staggered stance to better “fit” their unique anatomy. . Dave is no different. . I encouraged him to maybe play around with moving his foot out a bit more and to open up that same side more. . And wouldn’t you know it. Wammo bammo, we Dumbledored the shit out of his squat. . Look at the second video: no more shifting to the right. . Stop pigeon holding people to what a text book says a squat stance should be. Real life is not a textbook. . There’s NO one right way to squat. Experiment with different stances, widths, and foot positions. Find what FEELS better and more powerful and stable. Fuck traditionalists. . Also, side note: Since I made a Harry Potter reference, I rewatched The Half Blood Prince on my flight back to Boston last night, and it was the first time I watched it in several years. I just noticed that the actor who plays Cormac McLaggen is the same actor who plays the bachelor from the first season of Un-Real. . Yeah, that’s right, I watch Un-Real. . Whatever, don’t judge me. . And don’t think adopting an asymmetrical stance is creating dysfunction. It’s not. Forcing people into a symmetrical stance that doesn’t match their anatomy can be (not always) worse.

I’m in beautiful San Jose, CA this weekend for the RISE Fitness Business Conference. Well, I think San Jose is beautiful; I flew in last night so I haven’t had the opportunity to actually see it.

It’s going to be a great weekend networking and listening to the likes of Pat Rigsby, Kellie Davis, Mark Fisher, Molly Galbraith, Craig Ballantyne, and many more speak on their craft.

Oh, and I’m giving a presentation too. On Sunday morning. At 9 AM.5

Anyway, I’m on east coast time and up at the butt-crack so lets get to this week’s stuff.
