Stuff to Read While You’re Pretending to Work: 7/13/18

We made it back to Boston this past Wednesday night from our two-week European trip, and I’m juuuust getting over the jet-lag hangover.

Germany (Bonn, Cologne) —-> Netherlands (Eindhoven, Utrecht, Amsterdam) —-> London.

It was a lovely trip and I’m always sad to leave Europe, but we were ready to come back if for nothing else so Julian (our 1.5 year old) could back on a normal schedule.

I’ve been slacking in the writing department on my end of late, but I promise I’ve got some doozies lined up that will melt all of your faces off.

I love you.

BUT FIRST…CHECK THIS STUFF OUT

 1. Strong Body-Strong Mind – Boston, MA

We had such a great response when Lisa and I hosted a SBSM Workshop in Boston last year that we decided to do it again this summer.

I’ll be speaking to assessment, coaching up common strength exercises (squats, deadlifts), and how to better “match” your programs to your client’s abilities and goals.

Lisa will be discussing how to better manage client expectations, motivation, and how to adopt better mindset strategies for success.

The umbrella theme of this workshop is to enhance the SOFT skills of coaching, how to garner a connection, and build rapport with your athletes/clients.

  • Spots are limited
  • Early Bird rates apply for both students ($99) and professionals ($129)
  • CEUs will be available (NSCA)

For more details (including itinerary and registration) go HERE.

2. Even More Complete Shoulder & Hip Blueprint – Dates/Locations Announced

Dean Somerset and I are currently in the throes of drumming up new content for our staple workshop series.

We’ve presented this workshop all over the world – London, Vancouver, Oslo, Prague, Boston, LA, Minas Tirith – and even turned it into a popular digital product HERE so everyone can enjoy it.

We’ve already nailed down dates in Slovenia, Houston, and LA this fall (2018) and are also in talks to bring it to Detroit, Philadelphia, Edmonton, Australia, and Singapore in 2019.

If you’re someone who’d like to host this event/participate in a tickle fight please reach out to either Dean or myself.

Go HERE to register in the announced cities.

3. Article I Wrote For the PTDC

I wrote an article for the Personal Trainer Development Center on program design discussing some of the mistakes I’ve made throughout my career, as well as highlighting strategies that will undoubtedly help expedite the process for any fitness professionals out there who feel overwhelmed.

Check it out HERE.

STUFF TO READ WHILE YOU’RE PRETENDING TO WORK

Tuning Tension: Letting It Go – Noah Harrison

A few months ago I listened to Noah speak on the topic of muscular tension and how most trainees have zero comprehension as to just how integral it is for performance in the weight room.

Moreover, the strategies one can incorporate to increase muscular tension are fairly simple.

It was a very interesting presentation and I asked if he’d be up to writing a little sumthin, sumthin for the site.

He was. And HERE’s what he wrote.

The article linked to above is more or less a “part II,” the other side of the equation (what to do to decrease muscular tension), and something that helps bring the entire conversation full-circle.

Dear Personal Trainers: Stop Lying About Your Career – Lee Boyce

I sometimes have a hard time differentiating the nefarious politicians from the shady personal trainers.

Both camps, it seems, will say or do anything to appear more important than they really are and to get a leg up on their competition.

I remember when I used to work in a swanky commercial gym here in Boston The Rock once asked me where a certain piece of equipment was located.

I answered (and immediately started hyperventilating into a brown paper bag).

I then moved on with my life. What I didn’t do was then proceed to brag about I used to train The Rock, when all I really did was point him towards the lat pulldown machine.

Fit pros need to stop being braggarts.

Bridging the Gap From Rehab to Performance – Sue Falsone

OTP Publications sent me a copy of this book a few weeks ago, and I ended up stuffing it into my suitcase for my European trip hoping to snake a few peeks here and there between Julian naps.

I’ve always been a fan of Sue’s work and this is no exception.

Definitely worth the price.

I’ve long championed the notion pretty much anyone can train around pretty much any injury. My client, Ben, a local high school basketball player here in Boston, is a testament to that. He had knee surgery two weeks ago, is in a knee brace, and using crutches to get around. But he’s still getting after it coming to CORE to train. In the top video I took inspiration from @benbrunotraining and had Ben do some Hollow Position Landmine Presses. Man, these are hard. In the bottom video we’re doing 1-Legged RDLs w/ Wall Assist (on the non-injured leg only). Being injured isn’t a death sentence, and it certainly isn’t an excuse to not train. Make your “trainable menu” (make a list of what you CAN do), and get to work.

New client started last week and noted that some of her previous trainers pointed out her “scapular winging” and that she’s never been able to fix it. I took a picture of it (top pic). Fast forward roughly 1 minute and 13 seconds later I took the bottom pic. Better. I’m Gandalf. Unless you have a defunct long thoracic nerve (likely not) TRUE scapular winging isn’t really a “thing.” What is a thing is people not engaging their Serratus enough and/or not appreciating tension and working on motor control. Adding LOAD can be a game changer here. Wall Presses, push-ups, and anything that nudges the scapulae to adhere to the ribcage is going to be money. Stop telling people they’re broken and start getting them to train. Read more in the article linked in my bio.

I’m in Vancouver for the weekend doing a pair of workshops. One at Equinox for a crew of trainers and one in nearby Victoria for a two-day assessment, program design, deadlifting, cat meme extravaganza

It’s lovely here. And the people are lovely too.

I was at Equinox yesterday to get a quick lift in after a long travel day and saw this exchange happen with my own two eyes:

Meathead #1: “Hey dude, I was still using that (bench).”

Meathead #2: “Oh, sorry.”

Meathead #1: “No worries. You can jump in. My name is Mike by the way.”

Meathead #2: “Thanks, I’m Nate. Nice to meet you.”

I was F.L.A.B.B.E.R.G.A.S.T.E.D

That same scenario goes down in Boston? Where another dude jacks another dude’s bench press during prime bro hours?

A knife fight breaks out.

Canadiens truly ARE the nicest people on Earth.

Every pregnancy is different, and whenever I work with a woman who’s pregnant I always say rule #1 is to listen to your body and to let me know if anything feels off or awkward. That being said I find strength training offers great value during this time. Pregnancy isn’t a disability and there’s much a woman can do during this time to prepare the body for a MUCH bigger event than a set of squats. Giving birth! In addition to trap bar deadlifts, pushups, 1-arm pulldowns, wall assisted 1-legged RDLs, and even some Farmer Carries, Neidine also did a fair amount of deadbugs, Breathing Side Planks, and positional breathing drills during this session too. <—those are just far less exciting to film. We’re still getting after it even as we approach month 7, but also remaining cognizant that pelvic floor health & integrity is paramount too. But to quote @drsarahduvall ….”you need to lift shit, to fix shit.” And to expound on that further I’d add, “you need to lift shit in order to (hopefully) prevent bad shit from happening.” Nothing is set in stone during this delicate time, but strength training can help offset a lot of nefariousness.

I think it’s fantastic more and more women are seeing (and reaping) the benefits of traditional strength training. But much like we’d chastise dudes for always training their pecs or biceps, the same can be said for the bulk of women who feel training their glutes and only their glutes is the key to a desirable derriere.

Stuff To Read While You’re Pretending To Work: 5/4/18

I’m in Kansas City for The Fitness Summit at the moment and basking in the company of friends and colleagues.

Dean Somerset and I were invited in a day early to put on a special Pre-Conference where we spent four hours covering new material we plan to use for our upcoming (Even More) Complete Shoulder & Hip Blueprint.

No one left early or threw a table at us so I consider that a success.

Anyhoo: I need to get back to hugging it out with people. Onto this week’s list.

BUT FIRST…CHECK THIS STUFF OUT

1. Even More Complete Shoulder & Hip Blueprint – Dates/Locations Announced

Dean Somerset and I are currently in the throes of drumming up new content for our staple workshop series.

We’ve presented this workshop all over the world – London, Vancouver, Oslo, Prague, Boston, LA, Hoth – and even turned it into a popular digital product HERE so everyone can enjoy it.

2. Strong Body-Strong Mind – Bonn, Germany

My wife and I will be in Bonn, Germany on Saturday, June 30 to put on our 1-day Strong Body-Strong Mind workshop.

I’ll be speaking to assessment, coaching up common strength exercises (squats, deadlifts), and how to better “match” your programs to your client’s abilities and goals.

Lisa will be discussing how to better manage client expectations, motivation, and how to adopt better mindset strategies for success.

And then we’ll have a beer….;o)

Spots are limited and the Early Bird rate is still in effect (but not for long).

For more details (including itinerary and registration) go HERE.

3. 2-Day London Workshop w/ Luke Worthington

^^^ It’s so good we didn’t even feel the need to come up with a witty title for it.

After my workshop in Germany I head over to London to take part in a 2-day event (the weekend of July 7th) with my friend and colleague (and handsomest man alive) Luke Worthington.

This one is filling up fast…..go HERE for more info.

MASS 1-Year Anniversary Sale – Stronger By Science

A year ago the guys over at Stronger By Science (Greg Nuckols, Eric Helms, and Mike Zourdos released their monthly research review MASS (Monthly Applications in Strength Sport) and it’s made the industry better.

I for one HATE reading research and much prefer to let other people who are much smarter than myself to break things down in more bite sized, manageable nuggets of information.

This is a meticulously curated monthly service. The MASS reviewers sift through 100+ journals per month to help you get smarter and to better sever your athletes/clients. If you’re a coach, physique or strength athlete, or just someone who likes to nerd out and talk about actin/myosin chains at the dinner table this will be right up your alley.

Today (4/27) through next week (5/3) is your chance to take advantage of some BIG markdowns on the service.

  • $21 monthly subscription (normally $29)
  • $209 yearly subscription (normally $299)
  • $699 lifetime subscription (normally $999)

If you’re still on the fence you can check out the goods HERE for a free sample issue.

Otherwise you can just trust that I have smart friends and excellent taste in the resources I recommend to people and go HERE.

How To Age Gracefully – Eric C. Stevens

Many of the programs and tactics used to target the 40+ lifter are garbage. As my friend John Rusin would say:

“Just because you are 40+ years old does NOT mean you need a training program specifically designed for “40+ Year Old Lifters” as sleazy fitness industry marketing 101 is attempting to force feed you. What you really need is a program that is custom fit to YOU and your BIOLOGICAL age and needs, not your chronological age.”

I found this article very relevant with a sound message. Check it out.

When Should I Change My Training? – Charles Staley

Per usual, Charles provides a bevy of sound and practical advice in this article.
