1) Complete Shoulder & Hip Blueprint – Orlando & Boston

** Obviously with Irma kicking on Florida’s door this weekend, this event may be postponed. As of now we’re still good to go, but Dean and I will be sure to keep everyone notified.

There’s only two weeks left to take advantage of the Early Bird rate for Dean Somerset and I’s workshop in Orlando, at Spark Fitness, the weekend of October 21st.

You can go HERE for more details and to sign up.

HEADS UP: We’ve also added Boston into the mix later this year. Not Burlington Boston or Beverly Boston, two cities that are lovely, albeit not (that) close to Boston.

No, this is IN Boston. In the heart of the city Boston, at AMP Fitness.

Early bird rate is in effect now and if you’re super eager to sign-up you can go HERE.

How To Train Clients With Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction –  Haley Shevener

A lot goes down when a woman gets pregnant. That’s the understatement of the year I suppose, and it’s not lost on me that I’m a dude saying this.

What the heck do I know?

Well, my wife gave birth to our son earlier this year (trust me: some shit went down) and as a fitness professional I have worked with a litany of women through their pregnancies.

This was an excellent article featured on the Girls Gone Strong website, and if you work with women who are pregnant or postpartum you’ll want to check it out.

My new accessory straps that @smittydiesel sent me are legit. They’re perfect for exercises like face pulls (demonstrated below by my client, Emily) as well as many other row variations – both horizontal & vertical – in addition to things like curls, tricep work, and sled/Prowler drags. The strap itself is 20″ in length which makes it great for increasing ROM and opening up the shoulders and it’s impossible to tear. I like it too because whenever I have someone use it I automatically get to put the word “Diesel” in front of the name of the exercise. For instance: Emily is performing Diesel Face Pulls. That’s waaaaay cooler than just plain ol’ face pulls. Check em out on Smitty’s site here: dieselsc.com/product/diesel-accessory-strap/

Wow, I can’t believe we’re in the ‘bers’ already.

It’s September 1st and, right on cue, it’s a bit cold this morning in New England. I’m wearing sweatpants as I type this and am half temped to go grab a skullie (hat) out of the closet.

Alright, I don’t want to be one of those people that moans and groans about the weather on a blog. That’s the worst. Enjoy your Labor Day weekend everyone. See you next week.

2) Elite Fitness & Performance Summit – Chicago

I’ll be in Chicago this September alongside some other phenomenal speakers for the Elite Fitness & Performance Summit. The cast includes:

  • Nick Tumminello
  • Mark Fisher (if I have to follow him on stage I’m going to be pissed)
  • Josh Henkin

4) Workout With the Pedestal Footwear Guys

Last week both guys from Pedestal Footwear – Mike and Brendan (Mike actually trains with me every week) – made a cameo a CORE to film some videos for their site. I also took them through a pretty sick full-body workout. You can check it out HERE.

5) I’m, Like, Everywhere

HERE’s an article I contributed to over at STACK on core training for athletes.

And there’s THIS doozy where 5 coaches (myself included) were asked what their favorite Landmine exercises were.

HERE’s a cool article over on MensHealth.com I was quoted in on how a man lost 213 lbs without stepping foot in a gym. I know many people will get caught up on the the number and modality, however the LARGER take-home point is his unrelenting CONSISTENCY.

And lastly, here’s a recent video interview I recorded with Adam Rees from GRIT Gym.

Stuff To Read

Nutrition Is Not a Belief System – Dan Garner

The opening paragraph says it all:

“Nutrition is often seen as a belief system. In other words, the answer to “What should I eat?” is often based on faith, magical thinking, emotional attachments, and/or what feels “truthy”, rather than on real evidence or the scientific method. Until we fix this, nutrition will get more confusing, not less.”

It’s a debate that seemingly never ends.

Should we focus on our strengths? Or spend more time fixing the weak links?

I have to go to a wedding this weekend. In Albany, NY.

Can you sense my excitement?

I can think of a thousand and one other things I’d rather do: watch paint dry, talk about my feelings, jump into a shark’s mouth, anything.

I’ve still got some packing to do and other odds and ends to complete today so lets jump into this week’s list.

2) Strong Body-Strong Mind – Toronto

For real this time.

This was supposed to happen this past June, but Lisa and I didn’t have a passport for our little guy (then four months old) when we arrived at the airport and we had to cancel last minute.

Our bad.

We’ve re-scheduled for Saturday, September 23rd at Humber College in Toronto, Ontario. I can tell you – and I’m totally not biased when I say this (but I am) – there’s no other workshop like this in the fitness industry.

Lisa and I saw an underserved component within the industry – namely, mental skills – and we’ve combined our superpowers skill-sets to provide a 1-day curriculum that will help fitness professionals develop better skills to build competency, autonomy, and rapport with their clients, in addition to coaching skills (assessment, program design, exercise technique).

You can go HERE to register.

NOTE: the registration process is a little bit tricky and if you get to the point where you feel like you’re going to toss your face into the keyboard, please contact Bradley Corcoran at: [email protected]

Hope to see you there.

It’s been quite the week, huh? While I’d like to sit here and espouse a plethora of nuanced commentary on the unfortunate, and, quite frankly, sickening events of this past week here in the U.S., I feel all I can really add to the conversation is this admittedly un-nuanced soundbite:

“Fucking Nazis suck.2

A common practice is giving near maximal effort on every….single….exercise. I love when people want to work that hard, but that mentality can also be as detrimental as it can be helpful.

What Workout Program Works Best? – Erica Suter

I think I like Erica’s writing because much of the time it mirrors my tone and I can appreciate a good “bang my head against a wall” joke and references to dragons.

But, too, I think she makes a lot of sense and I respect the advice she gives.

People tend to over-think things and are always after what’s “best” or “optimal”

Newsflash: it all works.

As you’re reading this I’m likely 35,000 feet in the air making my way back from Florida to Boston. What’s also likely is Lisa and I trying not to destroy the back of our pants juggling a 6-month old lap to lap in an effort to keep him at bay and not terrorize the rest of the passengers.

Knowing today was going to be a wash in terms of productivity I planned a head and prepped this week’s list of stuff to read a day early.

Stuff To Read

Precision Nutrition ‘Hot Topic’ Report – John Berardi

I trust the people over at Precision Nutrition implicitly. If there’s ever a topic on nutrition I’m curious about or if a client has questions I almost always defer to them.

Today’s nutrition climate is sooooooo confusing and dichotomous. Who’s right? Who’s wrong? It’s sometimes hard to ascertain if something is BS or legit.

Well, PN (or, more specifically, the legend himself, John Berardi) just released this awesome, FREE, multi-day mini-course covering nutrition “hot topics” like whether grains are good/bad for you, the good and bad detoxes, whether you should be worried about GMOs, the facts about post-workout nutrition, nutrient timing, calorie counting, and, like, do unicorn tears really increase protein synthesis by 119%?

All the important stuff is covered.

The Best Fat Loss Article On the Motherfuckin’ Internet – Aadam Ali

There’s a kid-friendly link somewhere on the internet that refers to this as the “Best Fat Loss Article on the Motherlovin‘ Internet.”

Fuck that.

This.

THIS ladies and gents is what it means to write with infotainment in mind.

Tony Was a Weirdo, So Mark Started a Gym – Pete Dupuis

True story:

Pete sent me an email last night saying:

You okay with me publishing the following tomorrow? Don’t want to overstep, so asking first.”

I then proceeded to read the greatest piece of literature ever written.5

I wrote back:

“I got teary eyed reading that. Please, publish that motherfucker.”

Thanks Pete (and Mark). That meant a lot to me.6

I love this slide on scapular winging. Mostly because I look jacked, but also because it’s a term that’s vomited out there by personal trainers & coaches without much thought. Dr. @quinn.henochdpt notes that while it is a thing (congruence between the rib cage and shoulder blade)…REAL scapular winging is a medical diagnosis where the Long Thoracic Nerve fails at innervating the serratus anterior. Much of the time what’s “diagnosed” as scapular winging isn’t really much of anything and nothing more than a lack of tension and motor control that can be addressed rather easily. In this pic I’m using a ground based movement first, a side lying bottoms up kettlebell swivel and press, to teach context of tension and CONTROL of movement. No scapular winging. Weird. Stop tossing out words and terms that likely don’t mean anything and giving everyone the sense they’re broken. They’re not. They (probably) don’t need 37 different corrective exercises to fix their winging. They just need to learn how to do a push up correctly or something.

1. Strong Body-Strong Mind – Boston

Next weekend, Saturday, August 5th my wife, Dr. Lisa Lisa Lewis, and I will be hosting our Strong Body-Strong Mind Workshop here in Boston.

Like, IN Boston.

There’s no workshop out there catered for fitness professionals that deals with both mindset/mental strategy skills – helping to build rapport, competency, and autonomy with clients/athletes – and exercise technique and assessment.

So, why not combine the two?

There are still a few remaining spots left so if you need some CEUs or want to come to a cool city to hang out and talk about the Transtheoretical Theory of Change or upper extremity assessment like a motherfucking boss, lets do it.

Here’s the itinerary9

I don’t know if it was on purpose, but the fact the picture above was used as the lead in to this article says it all.

Spotting a DB press by the elbows is fucking moronic, and any trainer who does should be forced to walk off a plank into Mordor. Or Sparta kicked in the chest. Either one is appropriate.

However, this line from the article says it all:

1. Strong Body-Strong Mind – Boston

I’m really excited to announce the Strong Body-Strong Mind Workshop, coming to Boston (finally!) later this summer.

NOTE: Next week the early-bird special ends, so act quickly. Price will jump up to $249. Availability has been capped at 30 seats due to space, and there’s 10 left.

The idea is simple: there’s a corner in the industry that’s underserved….mental skills.

There are a lot of people out there who write about “mindset” and describe themselves as mindset coaches (whatever the heck that means) who, by and large, have zero academic background in that department.

Lisa, SPOILER ALERT: she’s my wife, went to school for that shit.

I went to school to help turn people into badasses.

So, why not combine the two?

Lisa can speak to building competency and discussing how to build the skills to develop rapport with clients. I can speak to getting people bigger, stronger, and faster.

Lets relax shall we?

3. Stuff I Was Sent, Thought Was Cool, and Thought You’d Want to Check It Out

One of the best things about this site, outside of my uncanny wit and LOLcat memes, is the fact I get offers for people to send me free shit. Many offers I respectively decline as I feel it wouldn’t be a good fit for my audience.

NOTE TO AUDI: Sending me a free car would TOTALLY be a good fit. Just sayin.

But every now and then I get sent stuff that’s pretty dope. Like….

**FYI: I receive zero kickback from recommending the following products.

Jabra Elite Sport Headphones

  • They’re wireless – like, for real. ZERO wires
  • They sound amazing, and more importantly stay in your ears.
  • And they do fancy shit, like track your heart-rate via the integrated fitness app, in addition to providing audio coaching during your workouts (if you so choose).15

I tried them out during a recent squat workout and they worked superbly. Likewise, my wife, Lisa, who’s a headphone snob looooooooves them. They’re basically hers now.

Olivers All-Over Shorts

If you’re looking for a pair of shorts that you can wear during a brutal deadlift session or CrossFit class and/or showoff at the next Catalina Wine Mixer…these are it.

Equal parts athletic and classy.

A better way to coach (or “scale”) the 1-Legged RDL or hip hinge. Top video is a dumpster fire. Majority of movement is coming via lower back and bending from the waist. This is what many look like when performing the movement. Bottom video: 1) think “soft knee.” 2) at first I like to have people bend their non-supporting leg so as to decrease the lever and make the movement a little cleaner. As someone gets more comfortable and proficient we can then make the movement harder by straightening out the leg. Until then it’s likely best for most people to bend their knee 90 degrees. 3) encourage a reach by reaching arms towards wall in front. This serves as a counterbalance. 4) another nice cue is to tell people their hips are headlights. They should stay parallel to floor the entire time (this keeps the hips from teeter-tottering side to side). 5) lastly, movement should come via the hip and not lower back. Give those suggestions & cues a try and see if they work for you.

Stuff to Read While You’re Pretending to Work: Complete Shoulder and Hip Blueprint Is On Sale Edition

Hey-o, guess what?

My flagship resource, Complete Shoulder and Hip Blueprint is on sale, like right now, for the first time ever, at 50% off the original price.

Why?

1. My (business) partner-in-crime16, Dean Somerset, is Canadian and we figured it would be a nice way to celebrate our respective country’s Independence Day.

Unity is swell.

2. My 5-month old, Julian, goes through a ton of diapers. That shit’s expensive.17

3. Why not?

It’s gotten amazing reviews and feedback from trainers/coaches from around the world, and I’m not at all biased when I say it’s pretty much the greatest fitness resource ever produced in the history of ever.

Don’t worry: I’ll be writing some actual new content in the upcoming days to coincide with the sale. Content that will educate and make you a better coach.18

In the interim I wanted to rehash some older(ish) posts that touch on some of the topics Dean and I cover in the course. Even if you don’t want to buy anything – did I mention it’s HALF OFF? – the info is fantastic, and you’ll be smarter. And more attractive.

The Difference Between External & Internal Impingement of the Shoulder – Me

Shoulder impingement is a garbage term. A lazy term. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t know the difference between the two, the mechanisms involved, and how to train around each issue.

Taking the approach that everyone should squat or deadlift (or whatever) the same way, with the same stance and setup, like we’re all molded to fit into the same textbook algorithm of perfection is unfortunate.

Here’s a great example of learning from your clients. This is Sara, obsessor of anything and everything glutes. As is the case with anyone in that department she frequents @bretcontreras1 IG feed. And why not? It’s a bevy of amazing content and information (and glutes!). At the end of last night’s session I was like “okay, you have 10 minutes to do whatever you want,” and she started showing me some new moves she learned from Bret and @soheefit. She started explaining a reverse hyper variation with a DB between the legs, which I then asked her to demonstrate. After a few reps I was like “ever think about wrapping a band around your knees.” Sara was intrigued, so we tried it, and Sha-ZAM…even more glutes (due to the added hip abduction resistance). We opted to play around with some ISO holds rather than straight up and down reps, but either are fine. Just be sure to engage your abs on these and not overextend through the lower back. All we did was a few 5s holds and she was feeling it where it counts. Pretty neat to talk things through with a client. Who says the learning process can’t be a two way street?
