I don’t know about everyone else, but I’m sooooo pumped for The Punisher on Netflix. Now, I wouldn’t say I grew up a big Punisher fan growing up (remember that Thomas Jane movie back in the late 90’s early 2000’s?), but I am a big fan of Jon Bernthal and was intrigued by his playing of the character in season two of Daredevil.

Between that and Lisa’s birthday this weekend I’ll have a ton to keep me occupied.

Complete Core – Mike Boyle

It would be hard for me to think of one coach who has helped shape my career and way of thinking when it comes to training people more so than Mike Boyle.

I remember the first time I met him back in 2005 when Eric Cressey and I drove from Danbury, CT to meet up him, Alwyn Cosgrove, and Valerie Waters at some seedy Irish bar after the three of them had finished presenting somewhere.

Admittedly, at the time, I had zero idea who Mike was. But Eric quickly set me straight and told me he was a pretty big deal. I went home that night, purchased Functional Training For Sport and never looked back.

I’ve watched every iteration of Functional Strength Coach and I still think his book, Advances in Functional Training, is still one of the best books I’ve read in strength & conditioning and one that really “meshed” things together for me as a coach.

So needless to say, here we are with another fantastic Mike Boyle project…this time diving deep into his brain on the topic of core training.

Stuff To Read While You’re Pretending To Work: 11/10/17

I’ve got a busy and exciting weekend coming up. First off I’m gonna head to the gym shortly after pressing “publish” on this post, go deadlift my face off, and follow-suit with my weekly visit to my favorite pizza place here in Boston – Upper Crust.

Later on I’ll head to the airport to pick my boy Dean Somerset. We’re both teaching the Complete Shoulder & Hip Blueprint to a sold out crowd at AMP Fitness this weekend. It’ll be bitter-sweet because after 20+ times teaching it across the world (LA, Seattle, London, Prague, Oslo, Minneapolis, Vancouver), it’s likely our last “planned” presentation of the course.

We’ll be sad to turn the page, but we’re excited to drum up a new curriculum.1

2) Strength House Podcast – The One Where They Dissect My 600 lb Deadlift

I’ve had a lot of people ask me about my 600 lb deadlift that I hit a few weeks ago: How did I  prepare? What did my programming look like? Did I destroy the back of my pants? You know, all the important stuff.

My coach, Greg Robins, and his partner in crime, Tony Bonvechio, go into great detail on my technique and programming in their latest episode of The Strength House.

There are few things I’m steadfast on:

Had a guy come in this past weekend for an impromptu assessment from West Palm Beach who mentioned a history of low back issues (specifically SI joint stuff). When I looked at his squat (top pic) I noticed a tendency of over-exaggerating the cue to posteriorly tilt the pelvis via excessive “glute gripping.” While I wouldn’t go so far to say this was definitively the root of his issues, it certainly wasn’t doing his SI joint any favors. Remember: the cue to posteriorly tilt is (mostly) to nudge people back to a neutral spine position who overextend. The low back can (and should) still be in APT. APT is normal. Instead, what I had him do is learn to brace his abs a bit more (and create more of a flexion moment) as he set up to squat. Doing THAT helps prevent any excessive APT from happening. Excessive being the key word here. You can notice the marked improvement in pelvic positioning in the bottom picture. From there I told him to try to maintain that position (canister) and to “pull down” into the squat. Things felt much better. We high-fived.

Gift of Injury: The Strength Athletes Guide to Recovering From Back Injury to Winning Again – Dr. Stuart McGill & Brian Carroll

Back injuries can be the worst, and if you’re something you likes to lift heavy things it’s almost inevitable.

Telling someone who’s livelihood is the iron to “just stop lifting” isn’t the right approach (not to mention woefully narrow-minded).

I received my copy of this book earlier this week and it’s really, really good. The way it’s written – Brian telling his story, with Dr. McGill chiming in to add his insights and knowledge – makes it an easy and entertaining read.

If you’re a strength athlete or someone who works with strength athletes, it behooves you to purchase this book.

It’s been a hectic past few weeks of travel and speaking. Two weeks ago I was in Chicago, last weekend Lisa and I were in Toronto presenting our Strong Body-Strong Mind workshop, and this weekend I’m heading to Saratoga Springs, NY to present my Coaching Competency workshop.

Annnnnd, the next few weekends after that I’m pumped because I get to sit down, relax, take a seat, and be a student myself.

John Rusin and Christian Thibaudeau will be in Boston (10/7-8) presenting their Advanced Performance Coaching & Programming Strategies workshop. Then, on the weekend of 10/15 I’ll head out to Springfield, MA for the Clinical Athlete Workshop with Dr. Quinn Henoch of Juggernaut Systems who will be presenting alongside Matthew Ibrahim and Zak Gabor.

“Scapular winging” can be a bastardized term tossed around by PT’s and personal trainers alike. It is a “thing,” but it’s not as prominent of a “thing” as people think.

I.e., true scapular winging is an actual medial diagnosis (long thoracic nerve, which innervates the Serratus anterior isn’t doing it’s job).

HOWEVER: when scapular winging is a thing (due to muscle weakness, pain, and/or faulty movement), this article explains how you should approach it.
