STUFF TO CHECK OUT FIRST

1. Strategic Strength Workshop – BOSTON & LONDON

NOTE: In case you don’t have any plans this weekend and you happen to be in Boston (and get really excited about the particulars of femoral acetabular impingement) there are spots still available last minute.

This Spring Luke Worthington and I will be putting on our popular Strategic Strength Workshop in both Boston, MA and London, UK.

A hometown switcharoo extravaganza if you will.

The purpose of this workshop is to give attendees a more thorough look into our assessment process and how we connect the dots between that and setting our clients/athletes up for as much success as possible.

I.e., turning them into deadlifting Terminators.

There’s plenty of talk surrounding the traditional x’s and o’s of program design, but we also take some time to dive deep into the soft(er) skills of coaching:

  • How to improve motivation
  • How to build better rapport
  • Learning to meet your clients where THEY are.

You can click the respective links below for more information and to register:

Boston (March 19th-20th) – HERE.

London (April 23rd-24th) – HERE.

2. Coaching Competency Workshop: Leeds, UK – May, 1 2022

On top of my cameo in London this Spring I am also putting on a BONUS 1-day workshop further north, in Leeds. I’m pumped for this one. I’ve never visited northern England and am very much looking forward to this.

Who knows? Maybe I’ll attend my first soccer football match.

5 Common Misconceptions About GPP (General Physical Preparedness) – Missy Mitchell-McBeth

Man training in the gym with a push sled

The more stuff I read from Missy, the more I need to go to the emergency room for shaking my head so aggressively in agreement.

Examine.com Anniversary Sale – Really Smart People

Examine.com is the only resource I refer people to when it comes to supplement information and the like. It’s truly the only unbiased  resource out there.

Their 11-year anniversary sale is currently happening where you can get 30% off all of their most popular products. If you’re a fitness professional you can’t go wrong.

6 Bodybuilding Lies Crippling Your Progress – Stuart McRobert

Cropped of black bodybuilder exercising with barbell

Honestly, this article contains sound training advice even if you’re not a “bodybuilder” by its truest defintion.

STUFF TO READ WHILE YOU’RE PRETENDING TO WORK

Sucking Off Your Client’s (Energy) – Perspectives On Being An Energy Vampire Coach – Chris Kershaw

✨NOMINATED✨ The pallid man with vampire eyes on the Halloween

I’ll be the first to admit I am not a rah-rah coach (and, quite honestly, I find those that are somewhat annoying). There’s this connotation in the coaching world that in order to be an effective coach you have to be full throttle at all times, as if you’ve injected caffeine directly into your left ventricle.

Then and only then will your clients/athletes truly understand.

This is a nice compilation (of which I am part of) that breaks down how absurd this is.

Tri-Sets For New Muscle Growth – Merrick Lincoln

Physical athlete doing barbell bench presses

I really liked this article.

Not because it was revolutionary, but because it was so simple and actionable. If you need a bit of a “jolt” in your training, this may be something you should consider.

Psych Skills For Fitness Pros – Dr. Lisa Lewis

There’s only a few more days to purchase this excellent resource on sale. Curated FOR fitness professionals and with over 13+ hours of clinical & research base information available, this course is undoubtedly one of a kind.

What “bogs” down most coaches are suffocating clients; those that seemingly lack motivation and are unable to respect boundaries. This course delves into that and much, much more.

(Plus, it’s actually developed by a doctor who lifts)

In addition, this course contains lectures, case studies, and recorded interviews with some of the industry’s best coaches (Mark Fisher, Dean Somerset, Tony Gentilcore, Georgie Fear, Molly Galbraith, Meghan Callaway, and Kelly Coffey).

There’s only a few more days to get it at the sale price.

Check it out HERE.

3. Strategic Strength Workshop: London, UK – April 23-24th (w/ Luke Worthington)

To serve as a “double-feature” of sorts, since Luke is coming to Boston in March we figured it was only fair for me to venture back to London as well.

Stay tuned.

That said…

STUFF TO READ WHILE YOU’RE PRETENDING TO WORK

The Junk Food Delusion – Dani Shugart

Unhealthy Junk Food

It’s fashionable of late for some “fitness experts and influencers” to tout junk food as no big deal.

And, generally, it isn’t. Personally, I love junk food (especially pizza and ice-cream) and eat it often. Also, at the end of the day, so long the calories ingested match YOUR goals and YOUR preferences everyone should be left alone and do whatever the fuck it is they want to do.

That being said, let’s not kid ourselves into thinking junk food is “healthy” or that there’s no cost to doing business.

Nice read from Dani here.

The “How to Lose Great Coaches” Starter Pack – Missy Mitchell-McBeth

Midsection of basketball coach with stopwatch

Ohhhhhh1 snap.

Shots have been fired (right on Missy!)

Why Posture and Pain do not Simply Relate – Ben Cormack

Male osteopath doing a postural evaluation

As I’ve stated in the past:

“Posture is nothing more than a position.”

Just because someone presents as “not mirroring what a textbook says is perfect posture,” doesn’t mean they’re walking ball of dysfunction.

Guess what? We don’t live in textbooks!

Posture is the result of the TASK being asked of the body and the LOAD being placed upon it. Whether it’s “bad” or “passable” is a hodge-podge of variables and it depends’. You can’t predict whether or not a certain type of posture is deleterious to the low back more than the Easter Bunny.

It’s an honor to be invited back to speak at Kabuki Strength’s Education week this year. Last year’s event was a MASSIVE (in both knowledge bombs and brawn) event and this year I am expecting more of the same.

You’ll get access to 54 lectures from some of the best minds in the health/wellness industry. The early bird rate is currently in effect so don’t miss out on taking advantage of that.

Alas, the Serratus muscle IS an important muscle, especially for shoulder health and it deserves your attention. Here are some excellent choices from Meghan.

STUFF TO READ WHILE YOU’RE PRETENDING TO WORK

You Might Not Have a Motivation Issue – Bryan Krahn

People use it as an excuse all the time as for why they’re not staying compliant with a training/nutrition program…

“I’m just not motivated right now.”

Bryan calls BS (but in a very understanding, empathetic way.

Jesus, he’s such a great writer.

Coordination: The Neglected Part of Fitness – Shane McLean

It’s true: How many times have you come across someone who, upon being asked what they’d really love to improve on, they came right out and said, “you know what, I could use some more coordination. That’s what I’m missing in my life. Who needs pecs?”

In all seriousness, Shane does a great job breaking down what coordination is and WHY you need more of it in your training repertoire.

How to Really Fix Tight Hip Flexors – Tim DiFrancesco

Easy: STRETCH!

hahahahaahaha.

Just kidding.

Tossing your face into a brick wall is likely a better use of your time. Tim showcases what’s really happening…

…the reason your hip flexors feel tight is because they’re short AND weak. Stretching them only feeds the issue. Do these drills instead.

STUFF TO READ WHILE YOU’RE PRETENDING TO WORK

Trust the Science – Doug Kechijian

We heard this phrase all through the height of the pandemic; yet there’s a twinge of Inigo Montoya’ness whenever you hear some people shout it through the rooftops.

“You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”

As always Doug pontificates deeper and at a level most people are unable to get to.

Habit Stacking and Building the Healthier Life You Want (One Step at a Time) – Sarah Moorman

I’ve been following Sarah’s work for awhile now and she’s impressive. Not only is she stronger than She-Ra and Wonder Woman combined, but her approach to training is accessible and actionable, and that take talent to pull off.

Anyhow, this is a short-n-sweet post by here that I know most people can get on board with.

Imposter Syndrome and the Fitness Industry – Dean Somerset

Dean wrote this absurdly relevant post four years ago (I know because he just shared it as a memory on his Facebook page) and it’s still valid today.

It will always be valid.

STUFF TO CHECK OUT FIRST

1. Inside the Coach’s Mind Workshop – Boston (w/ Dr. Lisa Lewis)

I’ve long stated that the largest “gap” in knowledge for most fit pros isn’t the area of program design or the “x’s” and “o’s” of how to improve scapular upward rotation.

It’s the soft skills of coaching.

I.e., what’s going on in your head.

In more sage words…

…what’s really lacking in most fit pros’ repertoires is how to leverage your own way of thinking, feeling, and behaving in order to maximize your effectiveness as a coach, your rapport & working relationships with clients, and your own resilience and mental health.

This November my wife, Dr. Lisa Lewis, will be hosting Part 2 of her Psych Skills for Fit Pros course: Inside the Coach’s Mind.

Volume One covered motivation & behavior change.

Volume Two will go deep(er) into the coach’s psychology.

This live event will be held at Ethos Fitness & Performance in Boston’s beautiful South End district and it is NOT necessary to have gone through volume 1’s material in order to follow along. While everything is “connected” when discussing psychology, this will be new, stand-alone content covered.

STUFF TO READ WHILE YOU’RE PRETENDING TO WORK

Debunking Myths on Strength Training For Female Athletes – Erica Suter

As always, Erica comes in hot (but in a way that makes a lot of sense and is hard to argue with). The excuses most young female athlete make (but really, it’s mostly the parents) as to why they shouldn’t strength train are just that…

…excuses.

And lame ones at that.

Dr. Amy Bender on the Science of Sleep – Mike Robertson (podcast)

I’m obsessed with sleep.

It’s the one thing I feel most everyone needs to address before they utter the words “ice baths” or “organic acai berry extract” when it comes to recovery (and overall health in general).

Improving sleep hygiene is undoubtedly the “x-factor” for most people, and this podcast sheds a ton of light on it.

Are Greens Powders Healthy? – Abby Langer

Full disclosure: I personally use Athletic Greens on an almost daily basis, and have so since 2010. That being said, I DO NOT push them onto my clients or athletes.

I also eat a metric fuck ton of broccoli, zucchini, asparagus, spinach, and other “real” greens.

There’s no doubt some brands out there more nefarious with their marketing that others; some claiming improved body pH levels, detox properties, or, I don’t know, X-ray vision.

This was a good, fair read via Abby.

Hook Grip Mastery: Everything You Need to Know – Manny Buitrago

I’m too much of a wimp, personally, to use the hook grip; but it’s efficacy with regards to lifting things is well established.

This is an AMAZING article that covers everything you need to know on the topic.

The Right Way to Partial – Josh Bryant

Some view partial ROM lifts as a key component to developing maximal strength. Others view them as an act worse than drop kicking a baby seal in the face.

The answer, as always, is somewhere in the middle.

Josh does an excellent job at explaining the good, the bad, and the “when to do partials?” in this quick read.

Twenty Years of Reflection: Was it Worth It? – George Kalantzis

George served as Marine in the years following 9/11 and spent time in both Afghanistan & Iraq. He reflects on whether or not it was all “worth it” now that our longest war has seemingly come to an end.

STUFF TO CHECK OUT FIRST

I don’t have anything important to share other than a hilarious story involving my wife.

Anyone who’s had experience moving knows what an utter abysmal experience it can be. To me, moving is about as fun as diving into a ravine full of broken glass.

The boxes, the labels, maneuvering the calendar around, the figuring out what stays and what goes part, everything, it sucks.

Alas, it’s going to happen.

We move in a week and have been packing up our things the past several days. As it happens, there’s been no shortage of “ooo’s and ahhh’s” coming across things/items we haven’t laid eyes on in quite some time.

As an example I came home last Saturday and noticed Lisa (my wife) had a few of her MVP plaques from college (volleyball) on the dining room table.

Me (looking at the plaques): “Huh, I see 2000 and 1998. Who was the MVP in 1999?”

Lisa: “Me, I already put that one away.”

(cue uproarious laughter from me).

My wife could kick Sarah Connor’s ass…;o)

STUFF TO READ

Strength Training Program Design Manual – Pat Basil

Pat Basil is the head S&C coach at Hamilton College and I have been really digging his content of late. He and I have crossed paths several times on social media and I love his perspective and approach to coaching. So much in fact that it prompted me to check out his stuff and I picked up a copy of his manual recently.

Full Disclosure: I get zero kickback for directing you toward this manual. I just genuinely enjoy pointing people toward excellent content.2

Flex Diet Podcast Episode #112: A Tribute to John Meadows – Dr. Mike T. Nelson

It was sad news to hear of John Meadows’ passing recently. I never met John in person, but it was unequivocally obvious how much of a genuine and kind person he was.

The world of bodybuilding and strength & conditioning will forever be in debt to John’s teachings and expertise. My good friend, Mike T. Nelson, recently dedicated an entire episode of his popular podcast to John.

Give it a listen.

The Only 5 Reasons You Are Not Losing Weight on a Diet – PJ Striet
