Stuff to Read While You’re Pretending to Work: 8/7/15

I wanted to begin today by saying thank you. Thank you to Jon Stewart and The Daily Show for 16 kick-ass years.

Every morning, for I don’t know how long, my ritual has been…

1. Get-up.

2. Pee.

3. Make breakfast.

4. Watch The Daily Show while eating breakfast.

And that’s how I roll.

This morning, however, was the last time I’d be eating my 5-egg omelet1 while watching and listening to Stewart’s commentary on everything from shady politicians and government BS to his pining about the New York Mets2 and the travesty, that is, eating a slice of pizza with a fork.

Not coincidentally, I suspect, this morning was also the last morning I’d end up with pieces of egg on my computer screen from laughing so hard.

Okay, deep breaths…I shouldn’t be so cynical. I’m sure Trevor Noah is going to do a fantastic job taking over for Stewart on the show. I’m still going to get up, make breakfast, and watch. But it’s going to take a while to get used to not having Stewart on screen to serve as the voice of reason, bringing to light some of the WTFness of the world, and making us laugh all the same.

Wait, what was that? No, of course not. I’m not crying! Are you kidding me? It just so happens, you know, Lisa’s in the kitchen cutting a bunch of onions. Yeah that’s it. No crying here.

Thanks again Jon.

Sounding Off – Christa Vancini Doran

I LOVED this article by Christa – owner of Tuff Girl Fitness in Hamden, CT. Christa is one of my “go to” ambassadors for women’s fitness and someone who, not only I respect a ton, but someone who unabashedly doesn’t back down from fighting many of the mainstream stigmas and myths plaguing women in fitness today. One deadlift, squat, chin-up, kettlebell swing, and push-up at a time.

Musings of a Disturbed Strength Coach – Film Fest Edition – Lee Boyce

Anyone who knows me well knows I love movies. Or, to play more of the uppity movie snob role, I love film.

I’m just as likely to head to the independent theater down the street from my apartment to watch a subtitled Italian film about a dude who makes a bowl of rigatoni for a chick he likes as I am to head to the movieplex to watch explosions, zombies, ninjas, hobbits, and exploding zombies fighting ninjas and hobbits.

Lee’s a good friend, phenomenal coach, and just as obsessed with movies as I am. We’ll often text each our reviews of recent movie we watched.

This post was a very witty and impressive feat of wordplay by Lee.

75+ movie references with a (fitness) message to boot. Give it a read.

Advanced Core Training – Dean Somerset

There’s only a few more days to take advantage of the sale price for Dean’s latest resource. He did an amazing job with it – as always – and I feel it would be a valuable addition to any trainer or coach looking to upgrade their knowledge base on “core” anatomy, assessment, and building exercise progression/regression algorithms.

Here’s a small clip:

Full Disclosure/Rant Ahead: Dean is a good friend, he was in my wedding, we’ve shared what was seemingly a 10×10 square foot room in the middle of London for four days, but still managed to avoid spooning each other.3

I can understand why some people would be suspect I’d promote his product. Affiliate circle jerking is what it’s often affectionately called on the internet. So cute!

Contrary to popular belief, us coaches and educators who have the audacity to make a living and release/promote fitness products don’t sit in our evil volcanos riding around in a roller coaster made of blow jobs as we hit the refresh button on our Clickbank accounts.

Most of us are working and training people on a day-to-day basis.

Moreover, we actually do want to help people, and educate, and take pride in our work, as well as pride in who and what we put our own names behind.

Do I make a little money in the process? Sure. What’s wrong with that? Given the amount of free content I (as well as my colleagues) provide on weekly basis I don’t see what the harm is.

Am I supposed to apologize for having smart friends who routinely put out amazing content and resources? I THINK NOT, KIND SIR!!!

Anyways, Advanced Core Training is an amazing resource. I think it kicks-ass. I think it will help a lot of trainers out there who are looking to separate themselves from the masses and who are looking to further develop their skill set.

Now excuse me, it’s my turn on the roller coaster. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Before we dive into this week’s list I wanted to say “thank you” to everyone who chimed in with their kind words and internet high-fives over my Vogue Magazine story the other day.

It was nice to know I wasn’t too off-base with my thinking and that many of you felt the same level of disbelief and WTFness that something absurd would make it to print in a mainstream magazine.

I (and Lisa) felt much better after writing it. Please continue to spread the word! It’s a message that needs to be heard.

Complete Shoulder & Hip Workshop

As a reminder: Dean Somerset and I are excited to announce our latest gig: The Complete Shoulder & Hip Training Workshop.

It’s like a travel Cirque du Soleil show, except with no tents, flashy acrobatics, animals, or ripped half- naked dudes contorting themselves into pretzels. Unless, of course, Dean decides to take people through one of his epic warm-up routines.

He’s a surprisingly supple bastard.

We teamed up last year for a handful of workshops that were really successful – London, DC, LA –  and didn’t want to kill each other, so we figured we’d do it again this year

This time we’re going to place a ton of emphasis on the hips and shoulders. We’ll talk anatomy, assessment, corrective exercise, programming, and we’ll also be doing a fair amount of coaching/hands-on demonstrations. And maybe, just maybe, I’ll bring along a slide show of all my wedding pictures.

Lisa and I finally received a bulk of them the other day. Here’s a sneak peek of one of our favs…

Nom, nom, nom, nom

CEU’s will be available for all workshops.

EDMONTON (only three weeks away!).

ST. LOUIS (in September, the EARLY BIRD rate is still active, but will end soon.)

CHICAGO (I’ve never been, and can’t wait to explore.)

(Just Added) LOS ANGELES (in November, I’ll finally be able to tour all the bars from the movie Swingers).

To Crunch or Not to Crunch: An Evidence-Based Examination of Spinal Flexion Exercises, Their Potential Risks, and Their Applicability to Program Design – Bret Contreras and Brad Schoenfeld

This is the full study printed in the Strength and Conditioning Journal and NOT an article. It’s long, it’s boring. Caffeine is recommended.

It’s older (four years), and for some reason I’m just now reading it. I suck.

I’m definitely someone who’s based most (if not all ) of his approach to core training and lower back “management” on Dr. Stuart McGill’s research. He’s the godfather of spinal research and biomechanics (and has an epic mustache) so who am I to disagree?

That said, I also like to consider myself open-minded and am more than willing to absorb new information and research that may be contrary to my former beliefs.

Three Daily Rituals That Stop Spouses from Taking Each Other for Granted – Peter McFadden

Holla – another wedding pic! And, guess who did her chin-ups leading up to the big day?…;o)

Relationships are work. Nothing comes easy. And Lisa and I always try our best to be open and cognizant of our relationship and the epic journey we’ve had and will continue to have.

We have date night every Saturday night. We pick a restaurant in the city (Boston) and we go enjoy a lovely night of cheese, meat, libations, and carbs. It’s important to us and something we always look forward doing. It keeps things fresh. Like we’re still dating.

Sometimes when we’re out I can’t help but observe other couples who sit across from one another in a seemingly blank void of “thereness.” They’re both there, but not there. Or worse, both on their smart phones.

Anyways I came across this article and liked it. I actually sent it to Lisa who immediately knew the researchers named in the article (she’s a psychologist), and was elated I took the time to read it.

Even if you’re not married, and in a committed relationship, I’d encourage you to read it.

An Open Letter to CrossFit HQ – Dr. Adam Schulte

Like a moth to a flame I found myself watching a few minutes of the CrossFit Games last weekend. To not be impressed by the strength & endurance exhibited by the participants would be a lie.

I was impressed. I know I couldn’t do it.

But I wouldn’t want to.

To say the entire event was brutal would be an understatement. I “get” that that’s the point (to a degree), but to me, as a casual observer, it seemed more like a circus aiming to give the audience a shiny bright object to divert their attention every few minutes.

And, to be honest, after reading this article, the guys running the show come across as pretty nonchalant about things. Unfortunate.

Also

Eric Cressey and Mike Reinold’s Functional Stability Training (all THREE modules) is on SALE at 20% off through the end of this week.

I was on-hand during the filming of all three (I even make a cameo, Spoiler Alert: shirtless, in the upper body module) and can say I still feel it’s one of the best resources out there on assessment and gaining a better understanding of “functional” anatomy.

If you’re a trainer, coach, or someone who likes to nerd out on scapulohumeral rhythm this will be right up your alley. And, I want to hang out with you.

Only ONE week left until the Elite Training Workshop – Boston is held on Saturday, August 1st, featuring myself, Mike Reinold, Artemis Scantalides, and Ryan Ketchum.

I’m really excited for this event and think it’s going to be a awesome experience for those who attend. The line-up is pretty rad and the flow of the day is set up in a way where each presenter does there schtick and then immediately follows that up with a hands-on portion.

So it’s less blah-blah-blabidy-blah and more “holys*** did you see Artemis Turkish get-up Tony? That’s badass.”

If you’re looking for some practical information that you’ll be able to use for yourself or with your clients, and earn CEUs to boot then this will be a great opportunity.

He’s a supple bastard. It’s deceiving.

We teamed up last year for a handful of workshops – London, DC, LA –  and didn’t want to kill each other, so we figured we’d do it again this year

This time we’re going to place a ton of emphasis on the hips and shoulders. We’ll talk anatomy, assessment, corrective exercise, programming, and we’ll also be doing a fair amount of coaching/hands-on demonstrations. And maybe, just maybe, in honor of Dean’s Canadian heritage, honor Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill in some fashion. I mean, it was 20 years ago this month that that album was released.

Yep, I feel old.

CEU’s will be available for all workshops.

EDMONTON (in August, so it won’t be cold as balls).

ST. LOUIS (in September, the EARLY BIRD rate is still active, but will end soon!)

CHICAGO (I’ve never been, and can’t wait to explore.)

(Just Added) LOS ANGELES (in November, Tony finally does his tour of bars from the movie Swingers).

Why the Fitness World Needs Tracy Anderson – Lee Boyce

Funny story on this. An ex-athlete of mine sent me a message the other day on Facebook linking to this article with a note “Really? Is this guy serious?”

I wrote back, “Lee’s my boy. It’s total tongue in cheek. He’s one of the good ones.”

It’s an older article – I can’t believe I missed it the first time around – but it’s a good one!

Squat Depth: The Final Answer – Dr. John Rusin

This was a great article by Dr. John (<– hope it’s okay I call him that), and it falls in line with many of my own thoughts on the topic.

Basic rule to follow: different squatters squat differently. Don’t be an a-hole and think there’s only ONE best way to squat.

How to Teach the Clean for Maximizing Athletic Power – Eric Bach and Loren Landow

Coaching the OLY lifts is definitely a weak spot for me as a coach, which is why I often refer out whenever an athlete or client wants to learn them.

But after reading this article and watching the videos I’m pretty sure I’m ready for 2016. See you in Rio de Janeiro everyone!

BONUS STUFF (Because, Why Not?)

HERE’s an article I wrote on Active.com on muscle soreness and whether or not you should be sore after every workout.

HERE’s an article I wrote for Stack.com that re-ran on Men’s Health on why I feel benching with your feet in the air is moronic for most guys most of the time. There’s a time and place for it, but then again there’s a time and place for sticking your finger in an electrical socket. I guess.

The trailer for Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s (21 Grams, BabelBirdman) next movie, The Revenant, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy, looks siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick.

I’m predicting winner for Best Cinematography right now.

What Being Obsessed With Your Phone Can Teach You About Fitness – Jessi Kneeland

There’s a joke amongst my friends that I’m one of the hardest people to get a hold of because I hate carrying my phone with me everywhere I go.

It’s not uncommon for me to answer text messages 24-48 hours after the fact.

And don’t even get me started on those people who walk down the sidewalk (or worse, across the street) with their head pointed down towards their phone.

I loved this post by Jessi.

Stuff to Read While You’re Pretending to Work: 7/3/15

Happy July 4th Weekend everyone!

First up: I wanted to take a few moments to highlight a few things coming up on my speaking itinerary that many of you may be interested in.

1. Elite Training Workshop – Boston

It looks like early bird registration for the Elite Training Workshop here in Boston featuring myself, Mike Reinold (his facility, Champion Physical Therapy & Performance is hosting), Artemis Scantalides, and Ryan Ketchum has been extended. Woo-HOO!

But it’s only lasting through the holiday weekend.

It’s going to be an awesome day for fitness professionals to learn from some of the best minds in the biz. CEUs are available. And I may or may not perform an interpretive dance of “I Believe I Can Fly.”

2. The Complete Shoulder & Hip Workshop

Dean Somerset and I are excited to announce our end of summer into early fall traveling workshop series: The Complete Shoulder & Hip Training Workshop.

The idea is to discuss and breakdown anything and everything as it relates to shoulders and hips, obviously. Including but not limited to anatomy, assessment, corrective exercise, performance training, programming, etc, in addition to analyzing World of Warcraft strategies. Because, why not?

Like I said, we’re excited about it and we feel everyone who attends will be excited too.

CEU’s will be available for all workshops as well.

EDMONTON (in August, so it won’t be cold as balls).

ST. LOUIS (in September, maybe catch a Cards game?)

CHICAGO (in October, Wrigley. Nuff said.)

Now on to this week’s stuff to read.

Understanding Fasted Cardio and Fat Loss – Adam Bornstein

As with anything – leg extensions, eating ice-cream for breakfast, kitten kisses, watching an episode of Downton Abbey – there’s always a time and place for it. Although, Downton Abbey? Really? I’d rather jump into a live volcano.

The topic of fasted state cardio for fat loss has always been a controversial topic within fitness circles. We could make a case for it, but Adam does a superb job at explaining why it’s not as beneficial as some may think.

Deconstructing the Deadlift – Mark Rippetoe

This one is a doozy. One of the most thorough and all-encompassing articles I’ve read in a while on the biomechanics of the deadlift.

If reading stuff on the deadlift gives you a boner, WARNING, this article is like Viagra.

Our Trip to the Farm: Where Does Your Food Come From? – Ian Fagala

Western and Southern Massachusetts is chock full of farms, so living in a kick-ass city like Boston I’m lucky in that Lisa and I have easy access to various farmer’s markets in and around the area.

We try our best to purchase as much locally sourced food as we can from markets, stores, and even when it comes down to choosing where we’ll eat out for “date night” on Saturday nights.

It never hurts to be more aware of the food you’re eating and where it’s coming from.

Note: since it’s pictured above, I’d highly recommend reading In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan. Do it!

Stuff To Read While You’re Pretending To Work: 6/26/15

Just like last week, I wanted to take a few moments to highlight a few things coming up on my itinerary that many of you may be interested in.

First up: the official “first look” wedding picture from mine and Lisa’s wedding.

I’m a little biased, but that’s pretty much the best wedding picture ever taken in the history of ever. Look at Lisa’s dress, her back!, the fact I wore matching colored shoes and belt (trust me, the belt matched).

If anyone’s thinking about getting married in southern Florida, I can’t recommend Michael & Josephine Photography enough.

1. Elite Training Workshop – Boston

2. The Complete Shoulder & Hip Workshop

My brotha from another motha, Dean Somerset, and I are excited to announce our end of summer into early fall series: The Complete Shoulder & Hip Training Workshop.

The idea is to discuss and breakdown anything and everything as it relates to shoulders and hips, obviously. Including but not limited to anatomy, assessment, corrective exercise, performance training, programming, etc, in addition to analyzing World of Warcraft strategies. Because, why not?

EDMONTON (in August, so it won’t be cold as balls).

ST. LOUIS (in September, maybe catch a Cards game?)

CHICAGO (in October, Wrigley. Nuff said.)

Now on to this week’s stuff to read.

Improving Foot Speed & Agility – Mike Boyle

I “think” this is an older post from Mike, but it’s relevant nonetheless. The article can be summed up best by this line:

“The best solution to slow feet is to get stronger legs. Feet don’t matter. Legs matter.”

Another line I liked:

“The reality is that a quick first step is actually the result of a powerful first push. We should change the buzzwords and start to say “that kid has a great first push.”

Yes, agility drills and “foot speed” drills have their place – but much like Coach Boyle, I find they’re woefully overemphasized in today’s youth athletics.

PRI – A Continued Conversation – Ben House

I first came across this article because I noticed there were a few trackbacks to my site (What can I say: Ben has excellent taste in the blogs he reads), but felt it was an excellent read either way.

Ben brings to light the idea that maybe the PEC (overly extended) postural pattern may be WHY some athletes are successful; and that trying to correct it may not necessarily be the avenue to walk down.

Hmmm…..

Why Third Place Is the New First – Pete Dupuis

Pete’s been killing it lately with awesome content on his new website. For all you current or prospective gym owners, you should bookmark Pete’s site.

Okay, so, before we get to this week’s list of stuff to read I wanted to address some housekeeping items first.

2. The Complete Shoulder & Hip Workshop

My brother from another mother, Dean Somerset, and I are excited to announce our end of summer into early fall series: The Complete Shoulder & Hip Training Workshop.

The idea is to discuss and breakdown anything and everything as it relates to shoulders and hips, obviously. Including but not limited to Anatomy, assessment, corrective exercise, performance, programming, etc, in addition to analyzing World of Warcraft strategies. Because, why not?

ST. LOUIS (in September, maybe catch a Cards game?)

CHICAGO (in October, Wrigley. Nuff said.)

Lastly, promise.

3. The SUMMER SALE ($40 off regular price) for Lift Weights Faster 2.o ends TODAY.

This is a resource I use often, and my wife Lisa LOVES it. Whether I need something quick for us to do on the weekends or if I’m scratching my head trying to figure out a 10-30 minute “finisher” for a client, LWF2 is always there in the clutch.

With hundreds of exercises, dozens and dozens of workouts, and some pretty stellar videos and photography you can’t go wrong. Check it out HERE.

Disordered Eating and The Rise Of the Competitive Fitness Model – Nardia Norman

This article brought up a handful of tough questions as to the REASON why some women opt to participate in fitness modeling, figure competitions, etc.

What I do have a concern with is when the “wrong” type of woman decides to participate and is given the wrong advice by a misinformed PT/Coach who still relies on out dated methodologies (low calorie diets, cutting of macronutrient groups, and excessive training).

So what constitutes a “wrong” woman for competition? The word wrong probably isn’t the best description, as that implies that this situation is black and white (which it isn’t), so a better word to use would be “qualified.”

An important article to check out if you or someone you know is thinking about stepping on stage.

4 Exercises to Eliminate Back Pain – Matthew Ibrahim

Matt does a good job of highlighting some basic, simple, actionable items that anyone can implement TODAY who may be dealing with a cranky lower back or any form of long-term back pain.

Stuff to Read While You’re Pretending to Work

I’m getting braces today. I don’t want to talk about it (except, you know, for blabbering on about it on the internet).

But this is pretty much what I feel like is going to happen.

Lisa had hers put on a little less than a year and a half ago, and had them taken off a week before our wedding. I elected to wait until AFTER our wedding (for obvious reasons).

And now it’s game time. In less than an hour. Shit.

Anyways, I’m sure I’ll be in a better mood about them at some point…but as of right now I feel like a pouty 13-year old kid who wants nothing more than to stomp his feet up and down.

No, no, no, no, NO!

Strength First: Ditch the BOSU Ball For the Barbell – Charles Staley

In this article, Coach Staley breaks down why unstable surface training make about as much sense as a poop flavored lolly pop (for NON-INJURED individuals).

I Went Paleo and Now I Hate Everything – The Everywhereist

This was, no shit, the funniest blog I’ve read on Paleo ever.

[Note to Self]: Lisa and I should quit our jobs and start a travel blog like this one. We could totally make it work. And, probably win a Pulitzer.

How To Do Anything (even the hard stuff) – Krista Scott Dixon

Whether it’s anything fitness related or trying not to make fun of a 38-year old grown ass man getting braces in front of his face, the reason most people fail is because they miss certain steps.

Here Krista tells you how not to do that.

FYI

Only two weeks left for early bird registration for mine an Dean Somerset’s Complete Shoulder & Hip Training Workshop in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada this August.

For more information, including itinerary, location, price, and reference to my favorite Arnold Schwartzenegger movie, you can go HERE.

ALSO:

We’re doing the same workshop in St. Louis (HERE), and Chicago (HERE).

Hope to see you at one of them. It’s going to be amazeballs.

Physical Preparation 101 – Mike Robertson

The best coaches are the most efficient coaches. They’re able to assess their athletes/clients and “streamline” the program writing process.

It doesn’t have to be like rocket science or solving long division.

TODAY (6/5) is the last day to purchase this fantastic resource at a significant discount ($100 off the regular price), and learn from one of the best coaches I know.

In addition, there is a 2-pay option, so that’s something to consider for those who are a bit more price sensitive.

That said, I can pretty much guarantee PP 101 will pay for itself 10x over from all the things you’ll learn, not to mention be able to immediately apply on Day #1.

This is not a cost, it’s an investment…….in yourself.

Todd Bumgardner’s New Site – Todd Bumgardner

I’ve featured many of Todd’s articles on this site in the past, so for some of you he’s nothing new. He’s the awesome.

But for the many of you who are new to the site, Todd’s someone whom I respect a ton and he’s someone I feel you should be listening to and reading.

I mean, he’s bald, he likes to lift heavy things, what’s not to like?

He just made his brand spankin new site live and it’s the shiz. I encourage you to check it out and bookmark it, cause you’re going to learn.

Pete Dupuis’ New Site – Pete Dupuis

Cressey Sports Performance’s business director and Vice President, Pete Dupuis, has finally stepped into the 21st century and started his own website.

You won’t find articles on the best set/rep schemes or how to measure glenohumeral internal rotation deficit or anything of that nature here.

What you will find is real advice and logic on how to run a fitness business, sans the cheesy buzz words (TOP SECRETS!!!!) that many internet gurus like to use.

If you’re a current business owner or an aspiring one, I’d bookmark Pete’s site too if I were you.

Stuff to Read While You’re Pretending to Work: I’m Getting Married This Weekend Edition

This will officially be my last blog post as a single man.

I’m only posting this pic because the second we started talking wedding plans and was all like, “Babe, you know what would be really cool, if we…..” Lisa immediately stomped any plans for Star Wars anything. So I post this as a way to say, “what could have been.” It’s all good, though. I’ll figure out some way to reference LoTR. “One ring…….”

The funny thing is: I’ve had several people in the last few weeks say something along the lines of “oh, well, enjoy your singledom while it lasts. Your life is over!” when I tell them I’m getting married. I understand it’s all said in jest, and I play along, but I still find it a strange thing to say to someone when they’re about to embark on one of their most important (and happiest) days of their life.

If anything: I could argue my life is only just getting started!

In any case it’s going to be an amazing next few days, and I’m so grateful and appreciative for all the friends and family who have made it down here to Florida to watch Lisa and I get married.

Speaking of which, I have a handful of industry peeps attending the wedding and I figured it would be fitting to highlight some of my favorite articles of theirs (past or current) as the theme for this week’s Stuff to Read While You’re Pretending to Work.

Enjoy!

Tim Collins: Why Everyone Should Be a Kansas City Royal Fan (at least for a day) – Eric Cressey

It’s kind of hard to choose a “best” article from Eric because he’s written close to 7,942,409 of them. Give or take.

And while I could have easily picked one where he nerds out on something anatomy related, I always appreciate when he tugs at our heartstrings.

This was an article he wrote back in 2011 when one of our athletes (and good friends), Tim Collins, against all odds, made his Major League debut.

Your Adductors Are Your Friends. No, Seriously – Dean Somerset

Okay, now we are going to geek out on some anatomy.

I love this post because Dean breaks down why it’s ludicrous to say that patellar tracking issues have something to do with VMO weakness.

That’s like me saying low back pain is caused by sad unicorn feelings.

And speaking of unicorns…….
