1. Strategic Strength Workshop – BOSTON & LONDON

This Spring Luke Worthington and I will be putting on our popular Strategic Strength Workshop in both Boston, MA and London, UK.

A hometown switcharoo extravaganza if you will.

The purpose of this workshop is to give attendees a more thorough look into our assessment process and how we connect the dots between that and setting our clients/athletes up for as much success as possible.

I.e., turning them into deadlifting Terminators.

There’s plenty of talk surrounding the traditional x’s and o’s of program design, but we also take some time to dive deep into the soft(er) skills of coaching:

  • How to improve motivation
  • How to build better rapport
  • Learning to meet your clients where THEY are.

You can click the respective links below for more information and to register:

Boston (March 19th-20th) – HERE.

London (April 23rd-24th) – HERE.

2. Coaching Competency Workshop: Leeds, UK – May, 1 2022

On top of my cameo in London this Spring I am also putting on a BONUS 1-day workshop further north, in Leeds. I’m pumped for this one. I’ve never visited northern England and am very much looking forward to this.

Who knows? Maybe I’ll attend my first soccer football match.

STUFF TO CHECK OUT FIRST

1. Digital Strategic Strength Mentorship

Luke Worthington and I developed our 6-week digital mentorship last Fall because 1) we felt between the two of us, we had a lot of expertise and insights regarding assessment, program design, coaching, brand building, and business that we could offer to other fitness professionals to help build & grow THEIR businesses, and 2) because there’s a fucking pandemic going on that’s prevented us from doing these sorts of things in person.

(Hopefully soon, though)

Nevertheless, we had a great experience the first go round with a stellar group of fitness pros and we’re excited to open it up again this Spring.

It all begins on April 26th.

Click HERE for more details.

2. CORE @ Home

You can now purchase CORE @ Home for whatever you want to pay.

In all I filmed 36 workouts during quarantine last year using nothing but bodyweight, bands, and kettlebells and/or dumbbells. With many people still reticent to head back to their regular gyms (not to mention the scarcity of gym equipment out there to purchase) I figured this would be a nice opportunity to help.

Whether you want to spend $1 or $99 (FYI: the latter enters you to win a 5×7 shirtless pic of me), the workouts are ready and available to start.

STUFF TO READ WHILE YOU’RE PRETENDING TO WORK

6 Things They Don’t Teach in Bench Press School – Lee Boyce

Many think the bench press is nothing more than lowering a barbell toward the chest then hoisting it back up. That may very well be a worthy Wikipedia entry to summarize the most popular exercise out there.

But, as Lee notes in this superb article, there are many other factors to consider with regards to not only technique, but also METHODS, that many lifters fail to incorporate to help improve their performance in the lift.

How to Promote Personal Training on Instagram (Without Getting Half Naked) – Meghan Callaway

Meghan has built an impressive following on Instagram over the past 1-2 years, and she did it WITHOUT resorting to what’s seemingly a normal tactic nowadays…

…revealing more and more skin.

IG has grown to be the first thing most people view to get an idea of who YOU are as a fitness professional (even ahead of your website).

Showing skin, while not necessarily a bad thing, can be fleeting.

Meaning, outside of a few outliers, you’re likely not going to build a sustainable business through garnering likes alone on IG.

Meghan outlines several other ways to grow your following (and business) in a way that will STICK.

Should Youth Athletes Use Creatine? – Wendi Irlbeck

Very informative article from Wendi.

I will most definitely be bookmarking this one to share with parents.

STUFF TO CHECK OUT FIRST

1. Virtual Coaching Competency Workshop – Coming in March

Since I won’t be traveling anytime soon to present, I decided why not bring one of my workshops to YOU? I will be putting on my popular Coaching Competency Workshop this March over the span of three weekends.

I figured chances would be high many attendees would be fighting off the urge to commit seppuku staring at their computer screen for seven straight hours so made the executive decision to spread things out

  • 3 Hours on 3/7
  • 2 Hours on 3/14
  • 2 Hours on 3/21

All attendees will receive a recording (and CEUs)1.

You can register at the EARLY BIRD rate now through 2/15. For more info go HERE.

2.  Kabuki Education Week is Coming

I’m excited to announce that I’ll be one of 55+ industry leaders taking part in Kabuki Education Week that’ll be taking place February 1-7, 2021.

Kabuki Education Week – Hosted by Kabuki Strength – is a unique opportunity to attend 40+ live hour-long lectures (with Q&A) presented by the most respected and well established educators, coaches, clinicians, and athletes in the strength & fitness industry. This event brings together a wealth of knowledge across multiple domains; all condensed into week-long virtual format that allows you to attend as many courses as you choose with the added opportunity to purchase recordings.

You can register for my presentation (and save 50% through the end of the year) – The Hip: From Assessment to Badass – HERE.

Alternatively you can register for the ENTIRE event at the Early Bird rate – HERE.

This will undoubtedly be an event you won’t want to miss as the line-up, speaking as a fan boy myself, is one of the most impressive I have ever seen.

3. CORE @ Home

You can now purchase CORE @ Home for whatever you want to pay.

During the first quarantine I started a platform where I’d deliver 20-40 minute workouts that could be performed in everyone’s living room using minimal equipment.

In all I filmed 36 workouts using nothing but bodyweight, bands, and kettlebells and/or dumbbells. With many people still reticent to head back to their regular gyms (not to mention the scarcity of gym equipment out there to purchase) I figured this would be a nice opportunity to help.

Now that many parts of the US (and world) have started to implement a second wave of shut-downs, this resource is timely.

Whether you want to spend $1 or $99 (FYI: the latter enters you to win a 5×7 shirtless pic of me), the workouts are ready and available to start.

To steal an entire philosophical concept from @chweingroff (he won’t mind)…* . …Training=Rehab, Rehab=Training. . For those following along: This past Tuesday marked the 3-month “anniversary” of my Achilles repair surgery. . Anniversary is kind of a weird word to use here. It’s generally not used to commemorate shitty and altogether nefarious things. . I mean you’d have to be a real a-hole to celebrate Bambi’s mom dying, or, I don’t know, country music…😉 . While the injury itself sucked donkey balls, and the subsequent surgery and shenanigans thereafter were no walk in the park either… . …I will say the past three months, weirdly, has been an assortment of appreciation and perspective. . I’ve learned quite a bit about myself during this process. And while I’m no where near the finish line, it’s been a treat to serve as a source of motivation for others going through the same ordeal. . To that end, my training of late is beginning to see a cross pollination of “rehab” with regular ol’ training. . 1️⃣ Tightrope Walks (or what I like to call Slow Motion Moonwalks). . 2️⃣ Assisted Split Squat (focusing on keeping weight in my forefoot on affected side). . 3️⃣ Deadlifts! Considering I wasn’t walking twelve weeks ago this is pretty cool. . My 3.5 year old can crush me in a race right now, but at least I can deadlift. . Onward! . . #findyourtrainablemenu #achillesgate2020. . * I think.

I’m going GHOST PROTOCOL! . At the end of my training session today (I did upper body and my pecs could cut diamonds, FYI) I wanted to up the ante on my Achilles rehab. . I took a bit of initiative and preemptively added in some standing calf raise isometrics ahead of my rehab schedule, because, GHOST PROTOCOL Y’ALL. I live life dangerously. . Nothing crazy – a few sets of 10-15s holds – using the bands to provide a degree of deloading. . It…was…hard. . But a welcome challenge. . Additionally, today also included some 90/90 lift-offs courtesy of @davidgreyrehab . . 6 reps at each position with a 10s isometric on the LAST rep. You can swipe to see that vid, if for nothing else to watch @drlewisconsulting performing what’s now referred to as the “Vernon Swoop Lunge” in the background, named after @vernongriffith4 . . See, that’s what’s up: place attractive person in background performing a legit exercise = increases people’s attention twofold…😂 . . #findyourtrainablemenu #achillesgate2020

Problem” ➡️ Solution. . This is a video of a MLB client of mine. He sent me this video as part of his initial assessment. . See anything awry? . First off, that pink and purple whatchamacalit in the background is adorable…😉. . Secondly, anyone who works with overhead athletes, pitchers in particular, will recognize the motion I’m referring to. . It’s subtle, but pronounced. . We’re assessing his scapular upward rotation and if you watch at the onset, those with a keen eye will notice a common theme amongst this population of athlete: . His shoulder blades move down & together at first and then kinda stay glued together as he brings his arms overhead. In short: He’s fighting his ability to upwardly rotate. . The technical term is Scapular Downward Rotation Syndrome (as popularized by renowned physical therapist, Shirley Sahrmann). . I refer to it as “the shoulder blades are making out.” . The root cause is typically overactive downward rotators – almost always the rhomboids – in addition to overactive lats (which, in a certain % of the population, have attachment points directly on the scapulae. . Nevertheless, you may have noticed above that I placed quotation marks around the word “problem.” . My client noted no current issues or symptoms with his shoulders (although he does have history of issues). . I didn’t feel the need to sound the alarm and go into heavy duty corrective exercise mode, but I also don’t want to ignore things either. . Is it a problem NOW? Maybe, maybe not. . Could it be a problem later? Maybe, maybe not. . It should be addressed at least. . I want to improve his upward rotation. As such, we’re gonna HAMMER his Serratus (protraction/reaching) in order to do so. . Swipe left to see a nifty drill I like that does just that. . 1️⃣ Tall Kneeling Band Press w/ Exhale. . The idea is to press/reach (hello Serratus and scapular movement AROUND the rib cage) while emphasizing the FULL exhale in order to promote the canister position (stacked rib cage over pelvis with a sprinkle of posterior pelvic tilt). . MONEY exercise (props to @drsarahduvall ) that feels less like correctivy, eye rolley bullshit, and more like training. . No diggidy, no doubt.

Stuff to Read While You’re Pretending to Work: 7/5/19

I realize I have been very delinquent in keeping up with any semblance of consistent writing of late and I apologize.

I’m within the throes of getting ready for my Australia trip next week making sure client programs are updated and that I complete a few lingering projects before I leave.

Namely, preparing myself in the event a spider the size of a Volkswagon decides to cross paths with me while I am down there.

Nevertheless, onto this week’s stuff to read.

1. Strong Body-Strong Mind Workshop – Chicago, IL (w/ Dr. Lisa Lewis)

This will be the only time Dr. Lisa Lewis and I will be presenting this workshop together in 2019. In previous years we’ve presented it in Boston, London, Toronto, Bonn (Germany),  and Austin, TX.

This 1-day workshop is targeted towards fitness professionals and digs a little deeper into what really “bogs” them down and stresses them out….

…their clients!

  • How to program around common injuries.
  • How to “connect” the appropriate exercises to the client/athlete.
  • How to really add value with your assessment process.
  • How to squat and deadlift like a boss.

2. Strategic Strength Workshop – Boston, MA

Luke and I did this workshop last summer in London and figured it’s only fair to bring it State side.

Combined we have 30+ years of coaching experience (I.e., one Mike Boyle or Dan John) and this workshop will be two days where we uncover every nook and cranny as it relates to how we assess our clients/athletes and how we best prepare them for the rigors of every day life/sport.

This will be a unique opportunity for people to learn from myself, but especially Luke, who is one of the best and brightest coaches I know.

30 Days of Shoulders. . Day 11: Is the Bench Press Hurting Your Shoulders, or Is What You’re Doing Hurting Your Shoulders (Check Your Setup Edition)? . For shoulder health reasons you want the shoulder blades to be able to move: Retract, protract, upwardly rotate, downwardly rotate, all of it. . To lift heavy things, however, we need to pin those bad boys down. . Whenever I start working with someone and they mention how bench pressing always bothers their shoulder, rather than bog them down with a litany of corrective exercises they’re not going to do I’ll instead audit their technique; in particular their initial setup. . I want the shoulder blades to be TOGETHER and DOWN. . This is crucial to help “save” your shoulders during the bench press. . Also, wearing cool ass t-shirts help too.
